Probably the same reason teachers bang their students.

I can't wrap my head around the correlation between Catholicism and pedophelia.
Religious man blows up building. Safe bet he's a Muslim
Religious man molests children. Safe bet he's a Catholic. What gives here?
The priests make the headlines but it's an issue in all Christian denominations. Ministers across the board have been arrested for pedophilia.

What people in the Church did to cover up the scandal was horrible. And the ones that continue to do so can go to hell, quite literally.
But the statistics don't back up the claim that a priest has a higher chance of being a pedophile. It's actually the same percentage as married men.
That said, the number should be zero for priests because of what they stand for. They aren't supposed to be your average man.
I will add that this scandal doesn't make me lose my faith in the Church. The percentage of abusers was a lower percentage than the percentage of the twelve apostles that betrayed Jesus. And a betrayal of God is sin. Child abuse and child porn is a sin, a betrayal of God.
I will also add that when any small church non-Catholic clergy man abuses a child, it isn't a big story because the church closes, and that's that. The mere size of the Catholic Church as an institution makes the pedophilia more known.

That's a rationalization only a religious man would come to.
Posted on 7/27/16 at 2:12 pm to tke857
If that's what he chooses to do, then who am I to judge?
But seriously, from the liberal mind set, why is it wrong? Because there are laws against it? What if we changed to laws to make it ok? Is it fine then?

It's a Church for sinners, not a Church for perfect people. Man is broken. And we see that every day.
The men who understand the priesthood are some of the best men I've ever met. It's a shame that there are men who take on the role of a priest and throw it away.
But like every job, you have people in it for the wrong reasons. Teachers, cops, etc. Some of the best people you will ever meet, and some of the worst.

Actually Protestant minister pedophilia happens at a higher rate but don't let that get in the way of your notion.

Well, there's better than a 1 in 10 chance that any priest you know is fricking little boys and girls so this shouldn't be surprising. What's surprising is that it wasn't covered up by the church.
According to the most comprehensive study on the matter, "(T)he dioceses had been able to identify 6,700 unique accusations against 4,392 clergy over that period in the USA, which is about 4% of all 109,694 ordained clergy i.e. priests or deacons or members of religious orders, active in the USA during the time covered by the study.[2]"
Wikipedia article on John Jay report.
So your 1 in 10 is actually about 1 in 25.
Those numbers are quite close to the numbers of teachers who are accused of similar misconduct over the span of their careers.
The very real crimes were the bishops who knew about it and hid it, which didn't happen in this case.
Cheers.

Because if you are a fox, where else would you want to be but in the hen house.
Easy picking and everyone around you is doing it so you hardly even have to hide.

Right. I've never been to church, I wouldn't know.
I would however, venture to guess that the majority of patrons in church are not child molesters or 'sinning' in such a despicable manner.

Yup. The cover-ups were the downfall. And there were people who wanted to protect the Church. But hiding truth to defend the Church is just horrible, and not defending the Church at all. You have to trust that God will protect his own Church. The scandal is huge black eye on the Church. No doubt.

occurs at a higher rate? or is exposed at a higher rate? I would think it would be easier to expose the protestant because he doesn't have the mafia, I mean the Catholic church to help shield him

I don't like to look at sin like that. People are tempted in different ways and at different levels.
