all the time the guy spent writing everything out so tiny, he could have spent studying and probably would've passed the exam

Yeah, One time in high school, I made a cheat sheet during study hall for a history test that I forgot to study for. By time I finish... I realized that I memorized the cheat sheet and didn't need it.

Considering that you said this,

ETA: the last part of that final was effing brutal.. The one thing I didn't study for

I'm thinking perhaps yes. OP said that the dude got kicked out at 7:32 ...

I don't understand why anybody would cheat in college.

The judicial process if you are accused is not something I would wish on any student. You are guilty until proven innocent, and it takes weeks to resolve.

Well, good luck teacher trying to prove he used it and labeling him a cheater. Dude had a "study guide" he has kept in there for weeks (what his story is gonna be when they file suit against said teacher/LSU).

Seriously, I understand the calc being out, but unless he saw him actually use it or use the mysterious yellow sheet, how can you accuse him and ruin his GPA?

Is your thinking the guy was cheating at the time. Why would the cheat sheet be tucked away in a calculator he can't touch?

In undergrad I only saw it once. The guy had the nerve to start a shouting match with the TA as well.

Indeed. And dealing with the ombudsman is a nightmare too.

This is in the syllabus:

quote:

All cell phones/pagers/PDAs/etc. should be
turned OFF before the beginning of class, and not be consulted in any way
during class. During testing, any such consultation may result in a grade
of zero. Violations of this policy will minimally result in expulsion from the
classroom, and repeated violation will result in expulsion from the course.

Not sure if the "etc." would cover calculators, but it's pretty clear that no electronic devices are allowed during testing. He also announced, multiple times, that you should only have a pencil/eraser on your desk.

I don't really give two shits whether or not he gets expelled though. Doesn't matter to me what happens to him. I'm just assuming he'll be failing the course at the very least.

From LSU article on academic misconduct:

quote:

12. Unauthorized materials - Using unauthorized materials or technological
devices during a quiz/test or on any assignment/project submitted for a
grade. This non authorized use will include the course textbook or other
materials, such as a notebook normally brought to a class meeting, but not
authorized for use during a quiz/test by the person giving the quiz/test.
Having any forbidden and unauthorized material open and in sight of the
student taking the test/quiz during a test/quiz will be considered the
utilization of the material
;

Now I don't think a teacher can just give the guy an F on the exam without formally charging him with misconduct, only the Dean can do that (see section B of the link above). But if the teacher told him to leave before he took the test, then maybe that would qualify as a zero without a formal charge.

Everyone knows you have to write your cheat sheet in pencil on the inside cover of the calculator. Rookies.

I caught some kid cheating on a midterm once. it was a no calculator test, and he had equations and stuff programmed on his calculator. He held it between his legs and kept looking down at it.

poor kid.

No shite, or on the desk.

I've written probably 30 different formulas for my Calculus class on the back of my calculator this semester.
