Moderna Inc., one of the leaders among U.S. companies developing experimental vaccines against the coronavirus, entered a pact with Lonza Group AG aimed at manufacturing 1 billion doses a year.

The companies announced a global agreement under which the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical company will ramp up output of the proposed vaccine, which is based on a novel technology that relies on genetic material called mRNA. They expect the first batches to be produced in the U.S. in July.

I'm not an antivaxxer, but I'm not going to take a vaccine that was rushed to market in 6 months.

Well yippe for them — I won’t be taking it.

ETA to clarify I’m not an anti vaxer at all. Except for this one at this point in time.

I would get it. I’ve never had an adverse reaction to them in the past 35 years and we know more about adjuvants than we did back then.

I’d hope to have somewhat regular titers drawn after though.

ETA: for my age/ health hx, I imagine it wouldn’t be recommended for me right away and I’d also guess I’ve been exposed by then anyway.

It doesn't matter if you will take it.

A vaccine with enough doses to administer to at risk populations means football with fans, full bars, and flights without masks.

I nominate Oweo to be the first test recipient.

While they may have it produced by July it still won’t have approval until much later in the year. They are betting heavy that it will be approved and can push it quickly because it will already be in production. A couple of other companies are doing the same thing.

Yeah. A rushed vaccine doesn't seem like the best thing. How long do these things generally take to develop and implement?

The moderna vaccine is also being sponsored by NIH, has already entered in to phase 1+, and will be in phase 2/3 combined by the end of the month. Moderna in investor documents has said they plan to have approval for emergency use for at risk populations by September. Fauci has said vaccinating every American by January is possible. He is the head of infectious disease for NIH.

Moderna is trying to drive up interest and investment. It’s a race to find the vaccine and Morderna has as good a chance as anyone - but don’t fall for this posturing bullshite.

So, just to play contrary a-hole here, what happens when these companies have contracted all available production resources to produce vaccines "A", "B", and "C" but vaccine "D" from a small competitor is the one that works?

You’ve never had a vaccine like this.

They inject viral DNA, then apply a mild electrical current to induce incorporation into cells, which express the proteins causing an immune reaction.

No particular reason to think it’s unsafe, but don’t act like we have decades of usage supporting it.

For all we know this could induce autoimmune disorders.

Not 100% sure but they were throwing around the 12-18 month estimate for a reason.

There's an inherent conflict between doing it fast and doing it right. We'll know within 1-2 months if there's a high risk of adverse effects. I'll let someone else go first.

But there's also the risk that it turns out less effective than advertised and gives everyone a false sense of security. That would mean I'm putting high risk populations in danger while going about my day to day business.

The world waits months for vaccine D to be mass produced. A,B, and C vaccines get sent to Africa like Atlanta Falcon Super Bowl tshirts.
