According to this article two economics teachers from LSU conducted a study that shows that Judges who graduated from LSU give out harsher sentences to minorities following an upset loss for LSU. Da hell is this study supposed to do?

quote:
According to a recent study, judges who received their undergraduate degree from LSU handed out harsher sentences following an LSU football upset loss. The study examined every defendant case file from 1996-2012 for juveniles in the state of Louisiana.
quote:
Naci Mocan and Ozkan Eren, who both teach economics at LSU, conducted the study.
quote:
Mocan and Eren wrote, “The effects of these emotional shocks (upsets) are asymmetrically borne by black defendants. We present evidence that the results are not influenced by defendant or attorney behavior or by defendants’ economic background. Importantly, the results are driven by judges who have received their bachelor’s degrees from the university with which the football team is affiliated. Different falsification tests and a number of auxiliary analyses demonstrate the robustness of the findings.
quote:
The research showed that imposed sentences from judges who received undergraduate degrees from LSU could sometimes be 74 days longer after an upset loss for the Tigers as opposed to those judges who received their degrees from other schools.

They should quit breaking laws and they won't be in court.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ. This shite will never fricking end.
New decree:
Black people - do what you want. We won't punish you for it. Every problem you have is not your fault and you deserve to get away with murder.

I'll search, but I remember reading that domestic abuse reports increase dramatically following an Alabama football loss in that state.

They were both fairly liberal IIRC, which I guess is to be expected from college professors from India.
Eren was pretty cool though, I liked his class. Mocan had a tendency to go on tangents that seemed really irrelevant to the class. Both were pretty easy though.

Judges also give lighter sentences after lunch.

Very interesting and not surprising. There have been studies showing that EBR retail sales are lower after a loss and higher after a win.
And it makes sense if you generalize it to "judges give harsher sentences when they are in a bad mood." LSU losses just create a particular, state-wide kind of bad mood that make it easier to measure.

I didn't take the study as another excuse for the plight of the black community. But a mere analysis of the situation. I read most of the study...there are other references to stock market performance on days with good weather or after major sporting events.
Generally speaking, none of this is new stuff and similar studies are brought up in a good bit of Gladwell's books too.

I'll ask my sister next time I speak with her.
Have my doubts as she is pretty tough in the first place

She's not going to realize it's happening. Its not like she's sitting in the courtroom thinking "Because Les Miles can't adapt his offense to something remotely from the 21st century, I'm going to sentence this kid to a longer stint in Juvi"

I suppose it leaves out the reasons as to why those criminals are in court following game day, right?

Crime will be down drastically until next year...
