Is the whole “veterans need special treatment” overblown?

Not saying they don’t deserve a pat on the back but people really be overselling the veteran thing. It’s a job and you did it. Not for free but for some compensation.

As a veteran who volunteered for the Army, I think it is.

It’s a free country(for now). Think whatever you want.
You’re welcome.

They’re like a lot of other groups of people. Some are deserving of recognition and special treatment but there are a large number who are attention seeking and have never done anything to deserve special treatment.

Yes, it's a job... they were compensated for work just like the rest of us.

at minimum they deserve free private healthcare for their families. Having to deal with the VA on anything is a complete joke.

Why do you hate America so much?

You can have a healthy respect for veterans without feeling obligated to say “thank you for your service” every time you see one. Both my father and stepfather saw real action in Vietnam, and I can say with some confidence that the special treatment we see nowadays would make them both uncomfortable.

Not special treatment, just treatment they deserve.
Frankly I'm embarrassed by the treatment our veterans receive. Especially those who serve on the front line. Oh, great you get recognition at a ball game. What they need is true medical and mental treatment. Its a shame that the federal government doesn't do more for them. The fact that we have to have "wounded warrior" programs, and that most VA clinics are terrible. Every medical bill and every mental health need should be taken care of no questions asked for any soldier who goes into active duty. Our government bends over backward to cater to freeloaders, but someone who gets shot at, blown up, or worse for the sake of our nation can't get all the care they need is ridiculous.

^^^This type of ignorance is what the left has created over the last 30 years in this country.

At what point is this just welfare? A job is a job. My job doesn’t give me free healthcare for life. Before you say cuz not dangerous etc, a lot of construction workers and electrician don’t get it either

Didn’t you start this exact thread a few months ago?
I’m starting to think a veteran fricked your ole lady and you’ve got an ax to grind.

I see it as more than a job. The mental and physical damage most of them leave the job with, even if they retire early. And considering all the free shite we give away to people who just don’t want to, I’m all for taking care of our vets.

The fact is, any of them can be called upon at any time to die for their country, and they can't say no. No other job has that requirement. Putting yourself in that position entails a certain level of support from the rest of us.

As a veteran I’d rather see folks being good citizens…aka someone that is worth sacrificing for…than shallow demonstrations of appreciation.
At least in my experience the desire to not let your buddies down and being dependable were the prime motivators for willingness of an individual soldier to sacrifice. Patriotism or self actualization definitely play a part, just not as big as the team around you IMO.
ETA: a lot of the benefits surrounding military members today were recruiting incentives years ago.
