Is the Toyota Tacoma truly a "mid-sized" truck?

I get the visual appeal. It seems to me that they just appear bigger because of the wide fender molding and larger tires. The trucks are even jacked up higher to appear bigger so they have to add the mud flaps to close that gap between the ground and truck for the illusion that it's a bigger truck. Especially since it's marketed as such, with the "Prerunner" package to make a 2x4 truck look like a 4x4.

It's clearly obvious when I see a base model without all of the body side molding, large tires and mud flaps. Then compare that to the one that is commonly seen about. They're the same truck, it's just made to look bigger.

I've never driven one, but to those of you that have, do you feel they are truly mid-sized?

Base Tacoma:

Most commonly seen Prerunner 4x2 or 4x4 Tacoma:

All trucks have gotten bigger over the past 30 years.

The current gemeration Tacomas, in particular are only slightly smaller than the first generation Tundras (through the 2006 model year). However, there was a V8 option on Tundras of that generation.

So, it is mid-sized for the current market, but just 10, 12 years ago it would have been considered "7/8" of a full-sized truck, IMHO.

I don't know, but I saw one of the new Colorado's the other day and was very impressed. Great looking truck.

I wouldn't say it's truly a truck. Might as well drive a Prius.

All trucks continuously get bigger and redefine the different sizes. The current Tacoma is the size of a Tundra from a few years back, an F350, and the bigger ones are like freaking tanks now.

Regardless, I love my Tacoma. Best vehicle I've had, great size, dependability, and good gas mileage. I wouldn't trade it for a "full size" truck

Tacoma and others in that class = small truck
150/1500 trucks = mid size
250/2500 and up = full size

I don't know what would be considered small size if the smallest trucks are considered mid sized. That would also make the 250/350/2500/3500 trucks extra-full-sized trucks

No, no they're not.

The base is a 4-banger, prerunner and above are v-6...among many other things.

This is how perspective gets messed up - all those trucks are larger than their predecessors just a decade or so ago. The Tacoma is roughly size of the old F-100 and Chevy trucks from the 70s, yet you consider it "small". While it is one of the smaller trucks in the North American market - it is huge - just not as huge as all the other trucks.

I would consider it a "sports truck" and not "working truck". It's basically a Jeep style truck made for offroading and getting you to and from remote places with all of your gear. I have an 8 foot trailer if I need it to 'work' though. With the manual it's as fun of a vehicle as you can get. Shifting through the gears in 4lo is a hoot.

LOL, no.
Tacoma is a wittle baby truck.

Standard 1/2 ton is mid-size.
3/4 ton is full-size.

'Merica, dang right, bub.

Well this is wrong. They're both full size.

sorry bra, perspective isn't about comparing things to 40 years ago. its all about relativity to today's market.

Talking about America's sizeology...
Bigger is always better, unless it gets even bigger, then it's more better.

What are you, a Commie or somethin'?
