And as a republican, he also burnt down the house going after Vitter for hookers like it was on par with kicking a baby down the street. He did it for several months and that kind of prolonged character assassination tarred Vitter beyond repair and enabled a shitty tax and spend liberal to get elected Governor.
That was part of the complete anger at him for betraying conservatives a year later when cooler heads prevailed.

When he refused to endorse Vitter and Vitter ended up losing the election, his arse was grass and lawnmowers were coming for him.
It wasn't just Higgins that beat him, AG Jeff Landry, Senator David Vitter and State Treasurer John Kennedy and a lot of the LA GOP staff pulled a shite ton of strings behind the scenes to help Higgins defeat Angelle. Vitter's chief of staff and other staffers from the other two guys even started a super pac for Higgins called Make Louisiana Great Again to run ads for him.
All of those people don't put their muscle in the game against him if Angelle is a team player and supports conservatives.
Traitors are like serial killers, they don't stop at one and Angelle was dealt with accordingly.
Honestly, what the hell did Angelle expect after pulling a grandstanding stunt like he did in 2015 letting JBE win? That it was just going to be water under the bridge like nothing happened and the GOP power players in the state was just going to leave him alone? How stupid was he?

Most Americans can't name their own congressman, let alone somebody elses. Frick off. Nobody cares. If his votes suck, then boot him. Otherwise, he's better than a lawyer.

What's even worse is that he did all of this, and STILL expected to win in one of the most conservative congressional districts in the state. People that I know in his home town of Breaux Bridge even felt betrayed when he pulled that stunt back in 2015.
A vote for Higgins in the runoff was basically an anti-Angelle vote.
