Medical lab scientist, at 28 I decided to quit my job and go back to school. I start in May

I want to run a bucket wheel excavator.

While I understand where you're coming from, wouldn't it get a little redundant and boring after a whole considering you have to practice pretty much all day every day to get to that level?
For me personally, there is nothing I would rather spend my day doing. Sure it would get boring at times, just as law school, medical school, the military, etc does. But if you made it to the big show, even the middle of the pack guys are flying private, spending time in the most beautiful cities in the world, and the golf groupies aren't bad either.

I've got forester and soon to be engineer under my belt. Would've liked to be a sniper, but couldn't for medical reasons.
If I could realistically change careers right now, I'd go back to forestry

Already did change. Became an accountant (not taxes) and it was the perfect choice for me
If I had to change again... Definitely golf. I've played a lot the last year and have improved leaps and bounds. I wouldn't have the skill to be a good tour pro, even with daily practice, but I would've enjoyed trying.

I wish I could have more flexibility. Maybe a YouTube star or work a blog that would let me travel and do whatever I want.

I'm about to do just that. I start training for the airlines in a couple of months.

What did you leave behind to become an accountant? How difficult was the transition, specifically in terms of education/skills? What is your accounting specialty now? I'm considering a career change and would appreciate the advice.

In sales my book of business is my house. I build it up every day. Having said that. I've done my fair share of construction. It's definitely self gratifying.

Teaching. If you have the time, it is not hard if you put the effort in and plan ahead. I went into audit, because I hated taxes. Everyone at school wants to be a forensic accountant, without really knowing what they really do. So really it's primarily audit (internal, public, gov) or taxes.
If you have an analytical mind, can apply rules and use critical thinking, then it is the right field. If you see a bit of guidance and think, "that's stupid, I'm not doing that"... Then maybe not.
Not sure where you are, but if LSU is an option, the CIA program is amazing. You have to put in a ton of work and effort, but you will very likely, extremely likely to land internships along the way and a permanent position months ahead of graduation, not guaranteed, of course.

It changes from time to time for me.
Today, I wish I would have gone commercial aviation so I could be a crop duster along with farming.
Second, I wish I would have gone into the banking industry to go along with the farming. I actually enjoy the financial work that I have to do on the farm. I like working the numbers, crop scenarios, analyzing equipment purchases, etc. I already have about a dozen spreadsheets that I keep up with just for our operation.
All in all though, I enjoy managing a farm as a stand alone for now.

I get to see the shite I've designed on paper built. That's enough for me I guesss.
I found out recently that installers/builders do not give two shits about drawings you provide.

If $$$ wasn't the huge influence that drives us all, I'd love to be in forensic science. I've been working in a chemical lab for 17 years, but it just isn't the same. The job looks incredibly interesting, but those guys make peanuts.
