Holy shite. I understand nike ran an ad. It is not a common tennis term. An ad that is 21 years old does not make it a tennis term. There isnt a tennis player alive that would tell you the guerrilla effect is part of tennis nomenclature.

What is your point?

Are you really spending all this time over the fact you think they are over-exaggerating the commonality of the term guerrilla in tennis? When you already agree that he wasn't being racist?

It's fair to blame them for not standing up for what they believe or for what is right due to public pressure.

They shouldn't be "taken to the cleaners" over a business decision is my point.

But I don't blame a company for not making a stand regarding a tennis announcer. That isn't the battleground to take a stand on

I played in college in the 90s. It was a term that was around. Your experience and Martinas experience isn't everyone's experience. We get it. You played college tennis. Lots of people did. The term has been used before and was not uncommon in the tennis circles I was in. It described a style of play. I bet you have not heard of the cobra style forehand either. But it was all the rage on the west coast in the late 90s.

Let's just end this argument by saying it's an "outdated" term. While it might have been used back in the day when aggressive net play was more predominant, I am 29, played through high school (not through college like you studs), and watch more tennis than any other sport sans football, and I've never heard the term once.

I completely agree he meant "guerrilla" as opposed to "gorilla" as I don't even think the most ardent racist in today's age would say something like "gorilla tennis" about a black player nor does it really even make sense outside of just being an openly racist statement which people rarely make anymore, BUT I do agree that it's simply not a common term (in today's tennis game).

Damn, so they told him if he apologized on air, they would consider the matter closed and he could continue broadcasting the tournament.

He apologizes on air, and then they immediately fire him afterwards.

Again, if you're a company with moral fiber, it shouldn't matter who you are taking up the fight for.

Lack of vision/leadership and standing up what they(should) believe in, it's definitely fair to blame them.

So, let me get this straight, as of the times we live in now, the "worst thing imaginable" a person can be, is a white man spewing a racist comment?

While I agree, I find it funny how long this thread is considering every participant agrees that ESPN was in the wrong.

I heard he said "guerrilla attack". If you're not seeing that written it would be easy to think he was saying something else. However, after it was explained there shouldn't have been any action taken.

Correct. Didn't claim otherwise.

I'm with lsupride on this. I've played tennis as much as anyone on here, minus him, and I've never heard this term in my life.

Ok. And I was telling everyone I had heard it before, and explained how it was described to me.

That's all.
