to be fair the tech board guys are usually a bunch of dicks or ignore your questions altogether

Eta:
if you need service on all 5 tv's i'd suggest getting 5 roku streaming sticks and a subscription to playstation vue (sling tv doesnt allow that many simultaneous streams....vue allows 5)

for local channels i have an hd antenna, but its only on 1 tv. dont want to have to deal with 5 antennas.

This is fair.

PS Vue + antenna is your best option I believe.

I just ordered an unlocked Firestick off of Ebay for my TV that isn't hooked up to cable. Will let you know how it is.

Worse than the OT? Good one.

Just set it up the right way. If you've ever had cable in your house all of the coax is already split and running to the rooms. Install antenna larger than 30" and connect it where your cable line comes into the house and you're done.

ETA2:

FYI, Roku TV's latest OS update allows pausing of live OTA broadcasts. Not a DVR but still pretty cool.

Your best bet is PS Vue and possibly an antenna. Depending on where you are, you may get locals, but you have to be in a major city (NO is not one) to get them. I had PS Vue and an antenna and liked it, recently switched to DirecTVNow but that only has 2 simultaneous streams so wouldn't work for you.

If he needs local on all 5 TVs he needs to look at something like Tablo LINK / It's an OTA DVR. Hook one antenna up to Tablo and then stream locals to the 5 TVs.

It's not unlocked. The Amazon fire products are built on top of the android OS, which can be rooted. However, you don't need to root in order to get android apps on the fire products. You can send (sideload) apps from a computer, smartphone, tablet, etc. to the Fire tv/stick over wifi.

My current setup is an hd antenna and fire tv in the main room and antenna and fire stick in the bedroom. Both devices with kodi.

Covers everything I would need personally. All live sports and movies/tv shows. Don't watch a lot of "cable" tv as it is so no need for Vue or Sling.

Pay $85 a month for high speed internet. Beats $200+ with cable.

One thing to consider is where you get your internet.

I have two choices for internet providers. They offer unlimited internet usage if you pay for cable through them, but charge you for data usage over 500 GB if you don't buy their cable.

If you are streaming TV and Kodi you may hit 500 GB if you have a family.
