The amount of beers depends on the weight of the guy and the ABV of the beers.
12 pussy arse Mich Ultras for a 250 pounder is nothing.
12 o'douls for OP's 50 lb sack of manure might be an issue.

Thanks for all the input. I don't know whether to worry or applaud. He just seems to handle it so well, it's hard to point out a problem. I mean this dude can pound a 12 pack and still function/talk/act like he has never touched a drink. Amazes me yet worries me at the same time.

Seriously man. 12 beers a day everyday? He's an alcoholic by any standard. You need to talk to him.

I worked with a guy like this. I sat next to him for 12 years. He was paranoid but very good at his job.

I once told him he was an alcoholic and he said that was impossible since he only drank beer.

Eventually he got a DUI. He had to attend classes and improved some.

Everyone at work kept asking me how I put up with him.

I retired as soon as I could and moved across the country.

The word for your friend is a functional alcoholic. Good for him.

He has tolerance.

It is probable that he is a functional alcoholic.

YES

I can't talk shite about him, because I drink a couple a day and maybe almost a twelve pack over a two day weekend..but 12 beers a day is definitely a problem. I have a friend who recently overcame alcoholism and it was the same way..12 beers a night if not more yet functioned just fine every day but his hands did shake pretty good..only 35 years old. Sad.

Could he sit down and drink 12 Dr. Pepper's a day with no problem?

Does he?

From what I recall in rehab the definition of an alcoholic is not in the amount, it's what happens when a person drinks. Can he not stop once he starts? Can he not drink if he doesn't want to? Does he neglect family, friends, or become violent towards them? Are there other problems? Dui, health, etc? If all these answers are no, then he is a hard drinker, and not an alcoholic. Those are my memories from AA and Palmetto Addiction Center in Rayville,LA circa 2007 fwiw. I wish your friend the best.

Not if he chases it with water to flush his system at the end of the night

I had a friend die from organ failure due to daily alcoholic intake. He thought it was kidney stones because he felt the same previously and it was due to that.

Did you both graduate from LSU in 2001? When did he die? I mean, if he died today and was on a traditional educational path, he'd be 35-37. If he died that young from kidney failure or liver problems, that would be pretty unusual. Of course you implied he didn't die last week, so he could have been even younger than that.

Yeah I'm actually just saying that this seems extremely unlikely. It had to be something acute (like alcohol poisoning) or some other factor was at play.
