See i'm completely different with my '13 passat. We havent had one bit of trouble out of it and I do my own maintenance. We are keeping ours and getting the fix plus money.

I stopped reading after the coke spilling on the transmission. Don't be angry at someone else because you can't take care of your own shite.

Fwiw if you spill a drink on the dash in a couple places or with the hood open in a couple places you could certainly do a good deal of damage. But spilled in around the gear shifter does seem odd to do any damage.

spilled Coke of some sort has shorted out the gear shifter mechanism

I mean it's already fricked so what's the worst you could do at this point... I'd try cleaning the Coke out. That shite gets all sticky and nasty when it dries. I'd take the console apart and clean out everything I could with warm water. Then let it dry a bit and hit it w/ some WD-40 (water dispersant). Before you clean it make note of any areas that have lubricant and reapply after cleaning.

Worth a shot if it could save you $1400.

CRC electronics cleaner would be better, IMO.

I didn't spill Coke on the transmission. Apparently something spilled around the gear shifter, which has that leather wrap thing. At some point they switched from a mechanical shifter to electronic & it shorted. All I'm saying is it crappily made if that renders a car useless.

If it was my car I'd try that too. Like I said, the thing is fricked right now and they want to replace it. Before I shelled out that money I'd go on a cleaning rampage to get all the Coke out and see if that fixed it.

If it doesn't work then you're still at the same point you're at right now... replacing it.

I ran my truck into a tree once, and Toyota wouldn't warranty the broken headlight even though it was still under warranty. What a crock of shite

I think it sucks for OP, but the dealer shouldn't eat it because he's a messy drinker.

are you not familiar with all the shite VW is in right now?

Sure I am. Retards not being able to manage to take care of their own property hasn't come up.

Feel free to link me to where it's VW's responsibility to repair something for free when it was caused by that person's carelessness.

People are flaming on this thread just because they love stirring the pot. If their co-worker was telling them this story to their face, they'd be like, "Damn, bro. That's fricked up." Because it is. You've got a right to be angry.

It's a new car and you're getting jerked around. Guess what, OT- people occasionally spill a drink during their morning commute. shite happens but more durability should be expected. Anything near a cup holder or center console should be sealed and protected. That, coupled with your experience with the tire and the whole "having to go the dealership for repairs" thing would have me pissed off, too. Getting repairs at the dealership is code for "we're going to charge you twice what you'd pay on the open market".

Tl;dr: You're pissed and you've got a right to be. frick VW.

Go to another dealership. If they won't fix, escalate to corporate. With all the shite VW is going thru, corporate will probably jump thru hoops for customer service.

I dealt with Corporate lately, they pretty much told me they act as a mediator but had no control over the dealership regardless if she agreed with me or not.

Everyone is. But most would understand that doesn't make a manufacturer or dealer responsible for fixing damage YOU caused.

That is BS. I deal with this every day and assuming the OP didn't pour a gallon of coke down the shifter assembly, the car interior should be able to withstand a spilled soft drink.

Think about all the cars you've owned or that you know of. Then think about all the spilled drinks and coffee.

Have you ever heard of them shorting out a shift mechanism, or any other component?

VW is gonna play hardball with any warranty claim b/c of their balance sheet. That alone would prevent me from buying one of their cars.
