I got one at 17, I feel like any younger would've been a horrible idea. 11 is way to fricking young.

To OP this is your decision. If you have taught your son about proper firearm arm safety and he respects firearms I don't see a problem with it. I'm assuming when you say you are "giving" it to him that you will still keep the gun locked away when not in use. I wouldn't give him the pistol and allow him to store it in his room or anything. I would say get him a ruger 22/45 or another semi-auto .22 and let him do some shooting. Just because all of these other guys don't trust their son to shoot a pistol doesn't mean you cant trust your son.

No on handgun. Yes on BB gun if 10-12. Rifle next. Handguns imho, are inherently more dangerous and easy to misplace for a youngster. (I know I misplaced one at a neighbor's house once - long time ago - but still got in trouble).

My son is 13. So far we've "given" him a .22 semi-auto rifle, 17 HMR single shot rifle, .308 bolt action rifle, and .410 shotgun. This Christmas he's getting a 12 gauge semi-auto. And by "given" I mean these firearms stay locked up in my gun safe and only come out under my supervision and training. For the past 3 or 4 years I've taught him firearms safety, care, and use. As for pistols, I do allow him to fire my pistols when we go to the range. But none are "his". The pistols are mine and he never touches or uses them unless I'm standing right next to him, hand one to him, and give him specific instructions on exactly what to do. The same is true for "his" long guns. For those who have ever served on the military and seen how a firing range is run there. That's basically how I handle him firing weapons with me playing the part of range control except in standing right next to him instead of being up in a tower.
As others have already said here, kids have no use for a pistol. Yeah you want to teach them how to maintain and use firearms in a safe manner. But you don't just give them any firearm like you would a toy.

Kid in my neighborhood growing up shot another kid in the head playing with a handgun back when they were both in 8th grade.

Wow. You are an absolute idiot if you use that chart to justify giving an 11 year old a handgun. 99.9% of 10-14 year olds are exposed to motor vehicles, of course that would be the #1 cause of death. What % of 10-14 year olds have access to a gun?

No I am living proof that a 14YO can have a gun, if properly supervised and taught proper gun safety, and not harm himself or others.
An idiot would try to manipulate the stats to fit his narrative and further his agenda based on ignorance and fear. Have fun doing so.

Just bought my 9 and 7 year old a .22 rifle. But I don't even own a handgun so they can't have one until I get one of my own.
