How soon is too soon for a flu swab?

Husband came home fever 102.6, headache, chills, body ache, etc. The issue is while I hate that he may have the flu, I'M scheduled for surgery on Wednesday and my only option for someone to bring me other than him lives 1.5 hours away.
SO if symptoms started this am, is it too early for a flu swab for him? I know 48 hours is too late for a script for meds.
Thanks.

sorry ... swab for him. If it's just a cold he can deal. If not he needs to not be out and about with me and rescheduling the surgery may be next to impossible. It really needs to be this year for insurance purposes.

You need to call the doctor. This is nothing to play with.

That is a guaranteed flu Dx. No swab necessary.

well we still need Tamiflu or Relenza which will require a trip to the doc. I'm thinking we can go tonight to the walk in clinic and start the meds 12 hours earlier. Whether he can bring me to surgery or not, I don't want him miserable and would rather meds soon than later.
And yes, Tbobby, that's what I'm assuming as well.

I think it's 48 hours after symptoms start that it's too late for Tamiflu.
So, haste is kind of important right now.
He either has the Flu or he doesn't. Go get the swab, so you know for sure -- and deal with the results.
Your surgery recovery is going to be extra sucky if your hubby is suffering from the flu and can't attend to you.

Be considerate of the people in the surgery center/ hospital and leave him at home so it doesn't get spread to weaker individuals. No old people need to die because you didnt want to inconvenience somebody less than two hours away.

Get him treated asap.
Wish him well for me.

Correct. Tamiflu is expensive (about $50/for a week's dose) and will only give a few days of relief beyond the normal course of disease if taken within 2 days of onset of symptoms. He is in for about 5 days of misery and very contagious. He needs lots of ibuprofen and fluids and some isolation time with good movies to watch.

damn, that sucks...one of you has the flu and the other has surgery...both the week before christmas...

He tested Positive for flu. Will see if my surgery by any luck can be moved. My hands will be raw from washing for sure.

I would ask your doctor/surgeon or GP if tamiflu would be advisable for yourself as a preventive. I have heard it CAN work that way. That's also if it is compatible with surgery. With lots of fluid and rest your SO might be well enough to take you by Wednesday. He may not even be contagious at that point. Rescheduling surgery is a pain the arse. I'd sure not want to start over with deductibles and such either. Good luck!

In the scheme of life it's not that big of a deal BUT our ded is $5600 ... that's a lot. And while I really am sorry that he's sick this just sucks. Fever free for 24 hours is the way to be before being in public.
They did offer me Tamiflu BUT idk if it's compatible as you said. And it's not really prevention from what I've been told.

I would start looking for a ride for Wednesday. Also..... get some yellow onions, slice them 1" thick and put them all throughout your house. Suposedly it stops the flu from spreading. We did it when my son had the flu and hes the only one who had it in our house.

Every time my people had the flu we did a great job of containing it. Have 3 kids and they've each had it like once but in different years. They had a designated seating spot, cup, box of tissue, etc. And we washed hands like CRAZY! It worked.
