Delta prices climbed significantly for mid-march. I'm doing a status match with United now.

American and United tickets are still reasonable for me.

It cost one extra day of vacation to drive and we save $800-$900.

What's your best opinion for looking for affordable flights from MSY to Manilla? I have no set dates yet. I have seen roundtrip for about 950 for a 2 week period in September. It was over 1300 for 2 weeks near the end of August.

Does it have to be MSY or will Houston work?

$685-$709 out of Houston on most dates in September on EVA.

You could either drive to Houston or get a cheap flight there. I'm sure you'll still come out on top. Don't forget to check SW.

I hadn't thought of Houston. I have family in Sugarland I can crash with for a night.
But, yea prefer MSY due to the closeness.

Will be more expensive since you'll have to connect to a bigger airport. Houston is one of the best places to fly out of to Asia. Lot of Asian airlines serve that airport directly. EVA (TPE), Korean (ICN), Air China (PEK) etc.

Yea, looking like a little more than 200 cheaper. What airline is ANA? Guessing they have some code sharing agreement (or something with United).
I would pay a little more to have the DTW Tokyo flight. Well, if my Mom hasn't retired yet.

ANA (All Nippon Airways) is a Tokyo based Japanese airline. Codeshares with UA like you said (both Star Alliance). Relevant to you: It has a daily direct flight NRT-IAH, although more expensive.

The flights I have seen in and out of America, have all been one of the big 3 American airlines, then switched to Asian airlines. And it does look like NRT is the most likely layover in Asia.

Here is a trick: Try to find the best (cheapest) overwater flights first. Then build in your own connections. Also try to price out of the US hub to your destination, then see how you are going to get to your hub.

This is why: All airlines have different fare buckets. When one connection is in a more expensive fare bucket than the other, then all segments get bumped up to the most expensive fare bucket. This is why you will see prices jump up a lot when you add in connections. If you are based somewhere in LA, then IAH is your cheapest bet. Take a cheap Spirit/SW flight to Houston. I just drive up there. Well worth the savings. Last time I parked at a 24x7 WM close to the airport to save on parking for 2 weeks

Try to check flights out of houston, you'll see EVA flights that stop in Taipei.

I try not to pay more than $250 roundtrip. I also fly domestically, avoid flying during major holidays, am airline-ambivalent, and check google flights and southwest calendar often.

I actually just snagged a mid-April flight from MSY to LAX for $200.

Hadn't been thought of that.
As for Houston, I thought hubs were usually more expensive. Just need to see how expensive SWA is, for the jump to IAH.

Im frugal. So I even look at Megabus and Greyhound to get to Houston. ~$20-35 RT

That is usually the case for domestic flights when airlines totally take over a hub and are dominant there. Like DL @ ATL. Hard to find cheap flights out of ATL on non SW/Spirit due to that reason. CLT/PHX for AA (earlier US), EWR for UA are some other examples.

I don't have time to mess with buses, when I would already have to be off work for at least 2 weeks. And with the cost of SWA, and being at the wrong airport, not sure if that's an option either.
