I had to transfer to Midland.

Which could be worse than getting laid off.

FWIW Saudi Arabia and Russia cut a deal last week to raise oil prices but I may have a lot of issues before its implemented im afraid. And the deal recently signed with Iran will let them start putting more of their oil out and they're not a fan of having to limit their production after years of sanctions.

Eta: Here is a good Forbes article on the geopolitics of it all

They are begging for welders in Lake Charles just an hour away from you. Paying very well with per diem and everything. Not sure why you have been unemployed for a year.

No idea what's true and what isn't. But I've heard CVX, Shell, Anadarko, FMOG and others all on the verge of BIG cuts. I know service companies are doing the same. I just keep hoping I'm more valuable than the guy next to me. But there's not a lot of guys next to me anymore .

I'm having to take it as it comes. If I get let go, my biggest questions is what do I want to do. Take the PE and try a different industry, or keep on keeping on and wait for it to turn around. I see big money for oilfield engineers in several years when this turns around. Lots of experience just hanging it up and retiring. But I don't like the roller coaster all that much either.

Its crazy these cuts haven't happened yet. Oil has been down for a while. But big bad oil tried holding on to the employees while losing money all year.

Not so fast my friend.

You want to see a true litmus test for an oil crash, watch refining. Refining is finally starting to see the effects of this downturn, with several companies laying off contractors and squeezing their budgets. To me, this is very concerning in regards to a true incoming crash. Keep watching refining, because if they can't make money, no one does.

I'm in the industry and currently picking up mess for my sick kids because I have 0 to do today. I've been affected because Shell engineering is cutting back on its QA/QC policies to shave costs. Thank heavens I've got a couple of trades under my belt and know a few farmers. My hours billed to my normal job has been cut in half but I've been hustling and working my arse of else where. Oh and I drive a 2011 Tundra, wife drives a 2012 4Runner, and I'm about to build a very veeeery modest home on 1 whooping acre. The industry will be back boys, just hold on tight and don't say no to work of any kind. Prayers sent to you all and keep your chin up

Very true. Kind of disturbing, in your link, that the guy is blaming this years warm winter, on climate change instead of El Nino. Especially after last years cold arse winter. Does he think the climate changed drastically changed in one year?

I believe that the what he's saying is that the warmer winter this year only served to expedite refining's issues, but that they were inevitable anyway.
