There's a lot of truth to this. I've seen friends that always have to get drunk before going out, and binge drink. Their social lives revolve around getting drunk, but can hold down a job. I use to do this in the Army, and attending LSU, but eventually grew out of it. It's definitely a hard habit to break.

We have this thread every week it seems like. And nobody can come up with the answer. If you have 1-3 drinks everyday I wouldn't consider that alcoholic.

Answer is pretty well defined. If ANY amount of alcohol causes negative impacts on you life, but you choose not to or are helpless to stop? You're an alcoholic.

The grandma and 1-3 glasses of wine a night was mentioned. If no negative effects AND if she could skip a night or two with no ill effects? Not an alcoholic.

There's the obvious physical. Wake up in the AM with the shakes? You're a drunk. Or, for example, 4 DUIs yet you still choose not to uber? You're a drunk.

It's not about the number of days you drink but about how you drink when you do.

it's not how often one drinks that makes them an alcoholic....

I'm not an alcoholic and I don't really enjoy going to social functions with strangers that doesn't serve booze.

I just don't like people and "going to get another drink" is a great excuse to end conversations

I am a recovering alcoholic, and I would never attend functions that didn't serve booze. Made every excuse posted here why I wasn't a alcoholic. Then I reached the bottom, my business was failing, my family was failing, my life was failing. Now I look back at the shell of what substance abuse made me. I'm 9 months sober, my business is back, my family is back, and my life is back. If you are wondering if you are, the answer is probably yes.

No idea, but I know a guy that was a heavy drinker but swore he wasn't a alcoholic because he didn't drink before noon. He said he knew he had a problem when realized he was as sitting at the convenience store everyday waiting for the clock to hit noon.

I'm not wondering. I don't crave booze at all and don't need it at all.

I love the taste of good booze and love a 2 fingers of good scotch after a long day at work while I watch sportscenter/HBO after the wife has fallen asleep, but I can forget about it entirely if I want to and have plenty of times.

ETA:

Also love getting drunk with friends at parties/bars/football games, but the hangovers are so bad these days that those events are slowly dying out.

This entire post is bullshite. There are people that run million dollar companies and have to drink every day to ward of the shakes. Just because you cant function at an extreme level of alcoholism doesn't mean it's not possible

I don't consider someone who literally can't hold a cup of coffee without shaking unless they drink to be very functional. Anyone in that stage of alcoholism cannot sustain being mentally and physically functional for long. You don't have to agree, just the way I see it.

The year prior to going into treatment when I was drinking the heaviest, my body started to shut down. Sure I maintained being employed but I was not properly functioning at any level. Having a successful career is a terrible measure of alcoholism.

These threads are always tough. My sis is definitely whatever non-functional is -- just a terrible mess when she has had any alcohol whatsoever. And if she is drinking, it's likely due to underlying anxiety/depression -- but, she has gone long periods of time without drinking. So do you send someone like that to rehab when she melts down? We found AA and a sponsor, plus psychiatrist, plus therapist has worked.

I was drinking pretty heavily 3-4 days a week for about five years. I mean, I was probably an alchy by most definitions, but never really missed work. I think that is functioning, but maybe I'm not an alcoholic.

I drink at least a 12 pack of beer everyday, but still manage to get up and go to work, do stuff with family, etc. Am I an alcoholic?

When you put alcohol before family, relationships, work. When it becomes the main purpose in your life.

Most answers are bullshite. Not to sound like the karate kid grandpa, but the answer lies within.

For example I drink wine every day and my quality of life would suffer dramatically if I couldn't. But I could say the same thing about meat. Or vegetables for that matter. Make me go a day without fresh produce and I'll be in a bad mood. Same with wine.

But IDGAF if I'm considered an alcoholic or not. My love of wine isn't harming my personal or professional life.

If ANYTHING starts to harm those then it's time to take a step back and rethink. That's really the only test you have to take. The hard part is being honest with the answer.
