Dropped mine 130 points in 3 weeks by only eating bone-in ribeyes and pork chops.

NP at the cardiologist wanted to put me on a statin due to my carotid artery u/s. I'm almost 47 but it showed I have the carotids of a 60 yo; the bloodwork included genetic testing and it's a hereditary thing. My ldl was like 92 and hdl was mid to upper 60s. Looking just at the panel, I was FINE. Until she got to the hsCRP .. 6.1. Freaked me out when she said normal/acceptable was less than 3.

Anyway, retesting in May ... I think I'm headed to statins but one of the tests showed that I should have the leg issues associated often with statins.

I'm too young for this crap.

Another cause which has been hypothesized is excessive cardiovascular exercise (hardcore distance runners and cyclists, not your run 10 miles a week, 5k warrior).

I had run a half marathon 3-4 days prior to the bloodwork .. I'm wondering if/how this affected the hsCRP.

They just had a big study released on a new drug that increases your HDL 30% and decreases your LDL by 130%. The study was supposed to revolutionize heart disease. But what they found out was shocking. There was no decrease mortality, and heart attack. So what the study concluded is that it's not about the numbers, it may be about how cholesterol is made and processed. When I conclude is that they don't know shite.

Because high cholesterol is indicative of a much larger problem, not necessarily a problem in and of itself.

diet and exercise - still doing that, but it affects my results very very little.

as mentioned on the last page, dropped my total from 400 to 250, which is still high, through diet and exercise.

at the 400 level, i was 5'11, 165 lb, about 18-20% body fat, was running 3 miles or so twice to three times a week. ate a mostly vegetarian diet. splurged on the weekends, but not like i was obese and slamming happy meals.

to get it down, i started putting in about 25 miles a week running, eating super clean (strict no fried food or cheese rule even when eating out, only buy foods with close to zero saturated fat). probably between 10-15% bf now. and yet i still can't get it below 250. sucks.

not to hijack but I once had a client who's cholesterol was in the upper 700s! lol. I didn't know that was possible. Think he had pudding running through his veins. Best part, he was skinny as a rail

I will let you know when I get mine checked next.

For 2 weeks I have been eating a plant based, oil free diet.

I was at 244 before, I expect to be around 150 when I get my numbers checked again.

that is absolutely nuts. familial hypercholesterolimia? cardiologist suggested i might have it. if so, i doubt there is anything i can do to get it under my current 250-ish.

Please tell us more. How is it better than statins? I have been told that I will be on statins the rest of my life.

Genetics is the (most likely) culprit. Do your parents or others in your family have similar issues?

yeah, maternal side has it bad. an uncle had multiple heart attacks even after turning vegan and doing cardo for an hour every day. still, i was hoping that with enough discipline i could beat it. turns out that's not really the case. at least i'm getting ripped, though!

That's ideal. You want your numbers to be 60, 60, 60, HDL, LDL, triglycerides.

Most people don't realize our bodies make cholesterol, and that it is so vital to our health. It has been vilified for years. People try to lower their numbers by not eating fat, and don't realize that when a doctor tells them they need to eat more omega-3's, and fish oil, that they're actually saying eat more fat.
