Texting, like drinking is an ACTIVITY that causes distraction leading to many accidents. These are not the same as not wearing a seat belt. Good lord.

Go to any ER where a person has gone through the windshield because he/she was not wearing a seat belt & take a good, long look at what happens to the human head. If your "freedom" is worth more than not taking that risk, go for it. Be sure & put in your will, "yea, that will show the damn govt!"

health insurance covers this

Not if it is determined that another policy should cover it (auto liability in case).

Health insurance company will subrogate it to the auto insurer.

Read your sentence. Texting is an action which leads to accidents. Not wearing a seat belt is an inaction which does not lead to accidents.

I made my statement because you put the 2 in the same box. get it?

I don't know why folks wouldn't want to wear a seat belt when they drive.

What's that got to do with personal freedom of choice?

Seat belts, with all of the aforementioned health safety benefits, have helped me stay in control in situations that, if I we're not buckled in, I would have possibly wrecked. And no, none of those situations were my fault. One was a drunk driver crossing the median on I-12 and the other was an improperly-towed vehicle coming loose in front of me. They help keep you firmly in position to maintain control of your vehicle. I have determined people who do not wear seatbelt are too stupid and/or lazy to do so.

Yes, if you do not wear a belt and you are in an accident, you are more likely to loose control of your vehicle which would cause other accidents and harm additional people. Wearing a seat belt is a requirement to drive. You don't have the right to drive without one. Same as having a license or having insurance. This might have been a good debate 20 years ago, but not anymore..

This right here is the best answer. Until everyone else is no longer penalized for your poor choice, it shouldn't be your choice. If you are the only one being penalized for not using the safety feature, there doesn't need to be a law about it

I never drive without a seatbelt so I don't care but with that being said my dad survived a car wreck because he was ejected. His passenger seat was crushed.

Not physically. Financially however it does. If I have to pay for your injuries after your inuance runs out because your injuries are more egregious due to not wearing a seat belt it sure as hell does affect me

I never said texting did not cause Accidents but early stats from states that passed texting laws actually showed an increase in traffic accidents, because people lowered their phones into their laps to avoid tickets and still TEXTED.. PSA campaigns instead of laws were my point.

How about slowing down it you are getting thrown all about the damn vehicle on the way to work? Dumb argument.

Terrible argument. While tragic, it's their call to not wear a seatbelt. A lot of legal things that cause death you could use this argument against.

The really strong argument is insurance. That affects everyone on the road.

So does soft drinks, chips, hamburgers etc. we should ban them all immediately. Dangerous activities such as hunting, fishing, and ATV riding must go as well, cant be passing the cost on to the general public for any trips to the ER. Like seatbelts, hate that it is a law.

How about we just not make everyone else pay for an individuals stupid decision(s)?

I don't really care whether you do or not. I know enough about inertia to always wear mine.

I think anyone not wearing their seatbelt is a damned fool.

I also think laws compelling any adult to wear a seat let are fricking stupid.

SIDEBAR: I also think the same way when it comes to helmet laws as well.

I still have glass in my forehead that little shards still work their way out from time to time from hitting to glass with no seatbelt but thankfully not going all the way through.

Somehow I managed to get out of the vehicle before passing out thankfully because the truck caught flames. I don't remember any of it after the intial flying towards the windshield.
