re: How do you feel about flying?

What's the worst that could happen when flying?
Posted on 7/13/14 at 7:55 pm to Ellakennedi
I fly if it's more than an 8 hour drive. 8 hours or less I prefer driving. By the time I get to the airport 1 1/2 hours early, deal with delays, fly for 2 hours, then wait on baggage, hail a taxi, etc, I practically could have driven it for not much more time if it's less than an 8 hour drive. Plus, then I have my own vehicle and I can do what I want when I want and can come back home whenever I want.

I like it just fine, but my arms do get tired.

My dad was a military pilot. When I was growing up he would take me flying in small planes. He would buzz our house, fly what looked like a few feet above the water along a river, hard climbs and descents. Took off and landed on a grass runway at a farm a couple of times.
First time I flew in a commercial jet I was thinking this isn't good. If something goes wrong the pilot can't land the big arse plane on a road or field

Love the airports and the flights. Checking in and going through security is unnerving.
I want to get my private license and a Cessna so bad.

go take a Flight Introduction course at your local GA airport. (like $60-100)
Once you get behind the yoke one time, you'll feel better about flying. Especially seeing the landing and take off from the front seat.

This. I got my PP in '09 at Flight Academy of NOLA.
But I can't really afford to rent ($160/hr) for trips. I can maybe get a 150 or 152, but I WANT a solid four passenger.
Cheapest decent I have seen was a refurb 1974 172. With the auto Gas STC so it can run unleaded to save $$. But it was $36,000 which is still a bit to plop down.
I like the Cherokee 6, because it has the four in the back configuration and I prefer low wing. I have 12 hours in a archer and I like the flying feel more, though the Cessna is easier to fly and more visibility. I like the profile of the low wing. Plus it can actually have six passengers.
But the price.
$59,000 gets you the 1974.

Yeah I much prefer the low wing design. Got a bad itch to buy. I like the Grumman American AA-5 Tiger.

I'm usually asleep before they take off and learn that the flight attendant has already passed out drinks and snacks when I wake up.

These things just reek of death to me. Will not get in one.

I work at an airport. I provide weather data for many users. I agree that the airport experience can be improved. There are annual training courses that each airport employee must attend to renew their security badges. Part of that training includes customer service.
Airport jobs depend on you, the customer. You should get the best possible service with the least amount of inconvience.
In addition, shops and other customer outlets should have better pricing when it comes to selling items esp. snacks and food. Why should your customers pay out of the arse for a coke or a bag of chips ?? Never understood that concept.
I will say though, you are more likely to die by getting struck by lightning or dying in a car crash that by flying in an aircraft. Aviation is safe and I think that the NextGen program that the FAA is trying to Implement down the road will greatly improve travel times and fuel costs. Of course, funding comes via the government and the state of the economy can affect how and when these programs are implemented.

Can you, or somebody else, give me a rundown on how much this really costs? I see numbers all over the place.
As far as small planes go, I've only ever been in one. It was a Cessna and was a float plane. It just seems like having one would be a lot of fun. The main thing I'd use it for is to view our crops and just cruise.

Time is money. Bare minimum you need 40 hours. That's plane rental time. Plus the instructor's time. All in all a private license is in the ballpark of about $8,000.

My grandmother hated to fly. She would say what if its the pilots time to go? Then we all gone.

We bought one in the mid 90's for 20k. 1958 model skyhawk.

I'd love one of those
with a new paint job it looks modern.
(this is a 1968) (got to love how plane designs changed little in the last fifty years)

Kind of what I figured... I could devote a lot of time to getting it in December-February.

I like those too, quick. I've never been in one. I loved the Mooney until I sat in one.
