Houston's Astrodome -- a new plan being considered for remodeling and saving it

Basically, they want to gut the inside, raise the floor, put a parking garage at the bottom and have non-air conditioned event space at the top.
What a waste of money. Just tear it down. The politicians seem so afraid to have their names attached to the demolition of the Astrodome.

It's nine acres of indoor open space on top of 1,400 covered parking spaces -- and will cost $105 million in government cash.

Voters may wonder why a new plan is being pushed since 53 percent of voters in 2013 turned down a $213 million referendum to renovate and convert the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' into a state-of-the-art convention center and exhibition space known as the 'New Dome Experience.'
The reason? This plan does not require any private investors, according to county officials, who add that if the plan is approved by county commissioners the dome makeover won't require a tax increase for you at all.
quote:
The plan will build two layers of parking which start on what is now the floor of the dome.
You could theoretically park your truck where Nolan Ryan pitched or Earl Campbell ran.
Another layer of parking on that and then the new floor.
Just a floor.
Giant conventions could rent it. The rodeo carnival could use to, too.
But there's a catch: The $105 million price tag does not buy air conditioning. We did confirm the dome will have ventilation, at least.

If this was such a sure thing wouldn't a private investor have approached them?
I find it odd an investor is just willfully not making money on such a slam dunk..

Tearing it down is much easier said than done.
The building has a good deal of environmental issues (asbestos) to solve before demolition could occur.

It's over. Just a rats nest now.

It is more of an emotional thing for Houston voters. They cannot bring themselves to vote for it's demise.

Sure, but between the cost of all the studies and votes and whatnot spent trying to come up with these plans to remodel the place, you'd have the think that they aren't really saving money anymore.

Will this not have to be fixed for a remodel as well?

I thought they tore it down 20 years ago.

1) Call up Texas death row inmates
2) Gaurd them with guns
3) Hand them jack-hammers
4) ???
5) No more dome/profit

That might be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

I'm not positive about the codes in TX but typically you don't have to remediate as long as you don't disturb the material. I think that's why they want to do a freestanding structure.

I think the project is completely dead now, haven't heard anything in years, but there was a similar plan for Parker Coliseum to be filled with office space.

On a related note, didn't the city of Pontiac sell the Silver dome for about 300 grand?
Now it look like shite.
Now it look like shite.

Why not just do the "gut the whole thing and make it a park/trail" plan? It preserves the "dome", You can still hold events underneath it, and people will actually go visit it because it will be a semi-interesting public space.

ETA - You can build softball, flag football, kickball fields, dog parks, etc. underneath as well.

The thing just needs to be torn down. It costs a fortune to maintain the thing just sitting there.

No air conditioning? No thanks

silly rabbit
there would be AC, they just dont want to list what it would cost.
it's kind of like that bunk arse new stadium deal the Rangers and Arlington are trying to screw everyone with.
they tell everyone a portion of the costs but hidden somewhere in the language will be something that significantly jacks the price tag up.

Ive always thought it should be made into a nice park/amphitheater with the same roof design.

That's what I have always wanted. Would be great for tailgating and the rodeo too.
Have a ballpark for little league games, and what not

This is possibly the only viable plan I have ever heard. As long as Engineers agree that the superstructure would be safe free-standing, it would be damn cool to have a soccer field and some softball fields under it and around it. That being said, I don't know the location situation.
Would that area see traffic as a public park? Or is it central ghetto and would become an instant crack and meth arena?
