I'm looking at possible places to stay for vacation (can be either during peak or off peak season) and am curious as to where you like to spend your points?

Generally speaking, when using points, I will only consider Hilton, Waldorf, Curio (limited number due to availability) and Conrad (limited options due to availability) properties.

Which city represents the nicest hotel and most value for points?

I'm truly open to suggestions (beach, city, rural, etc.). Can be anywhere, as long as Southwest flies to or can get to by car within a couple of hours.

I have over 400K points to spend and would like something nice for my family (wife and 2 young children) to enjoy.

I'm finding that the Hilton points program really sucks. 80% of hotels don't qualify to use points and it takes a minimum of 30k points to get a free night. Compared to IHG which can be as little as 5,000 points.

I will say this, their customer service makes up for it. They will give you free points & room comps for the smallest shite. I called to get my pet fee removed off my work bill and to pay separately. I said I didn't realize there was even a fee no one told me. They gave me 20,000 points just for the inconvenience.

I completely agree. However, I am committed to Hilton because the area that I travel to most frequently have nice properties and IHG doesn't have enough Hotel Indigos or Intercontinental Hotels for my liking.

A List Preferred member, almost companion status. Priority boarding, usually resulting in emergency row seating and free WiFi.

And don't forget about those free peanuts either. And more importantly, a safety record that speaks for itself.

Check out the Hilton in Cabo. Southwest flies there as well. We were planning that trip last thanksgiving but the hurricane down there caused a lot of damage. I'd imagine it's back up and running and nicer than ever.

Bacon, what's wrong with SW? Companion Pass FTW haha

I use Southwest too. I also get the exit seating which is nice. But their planes aren't near as comfortable as other big carriers.

But I use southwest for work so I can fly free for personal travel. They have great nonstop options and are almost always the least expensive fare. At the end of the day, the point is to get from point a to point b, so I'm not gonna use an airline that is more expensive and makes me spend more time in the airport.

To answer your question, since you have 400k points, I would fly to San Fran. SW has a nonstop flight now and the 30k points you'll use won't be that bad a deal considering the actual hotel cost.

If not SF, maybe Charleston.

The Hilton resort in San Diego is very nice.

There are a lot of good Hilton properties in and around Washington D.C. -- King Street in Alexandria, VA is a really cool place to stay. There's a Hilton and a Hampton Inn right near the King Street metro station. Plenty to do on King, and easy access to the rest of DC via the metro.

I've heard really good things about the Hilton Papagayo resort in Costa Rica too, but I think they only take points at certain times of year.

I don't know where Southwest flies, so it could be none of these suggestions do you any good...sorry I fly Delta.

Hilton points are pretty damn bad, but if that's what ya got in your travel regions, that's what ya got.

The Waldorf in Park City is very nice. I stayed there a couple years ago.

The Hilton at Whistler you can fly in to Seattle and spend a day or two exploring Seattle.

Boulders in Arizona has some cool stuff to do for families.

Hilton Cabana in Miami, as well as several properties in the Florida panhandle.

Several NYC Hilton properties.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Are you still in Jensen Beach? I used to stay at that Marriott there, when I had work in Fort Pierce. Great hotel. What was the deal with that huge mansion that was built there by the Marriott? I don't remember if I ever got the story on who owned it/ lived there.

I have been a Hilton Honors guy for a long time and I am about to switch to Marriott. HHonors are horrible on the prices for points.

That said, in the Hilton family, I like to stay in Embassy Suites when I can bc they are usually relatively inexpensive and you get a 2 room suite with it. Perfect for a family of 4. There is an ES in any city you would want to visit.

I've been doing it for five years and let's just say my tolerance level for traveling is becoming less and less as the months go by.

Personally, my idea of vacation is now staying home, but I can't be selfish.
