10-20k points gets you in some of their best properties with 5th night free on award stays and 3-7k points gets you in to some of their Four Points which can sometimes offer great values.
They just don't have as large of a footprint as some of the other chains.

We did a trip to Sedona one year with kids around that age. There is a Hilton resort there. Trips around Sedona, the Grand Canyon etc. it did help that we met another family halfway through the trip that out kids hung with a little.
Flew into Phoenix and drove up. That place is really sweet. Different than the beach definitely. Good luck.

I have never once run into this issue, so 80% might be a little high. I have stayed in hotels in downtown SF, downtown Seattle, downtown NYC and downtown Chicago for free. They were the exact hotels I wanted.

Yeah, but they give you like 15 points for every dollar that you spend in a hotel and a large portion of the time they are doing a promotion such as double your points if you stay on a sunday or something. How many points does IHG give you for each dollar you spend? Also if you have the Hilton Honors Amex you get 6 points per dollar at Hilton and 3 points on everything else.

This is sooooo true. I cannot even list all the awesome crap I've gotten just since being a Gold member (not even Platinum.) it takes longer and more points to get there than Marriot or IHG, but the benefits have been better.
The best was when I was able to book about 4 nights at a Hilton in NYC off of points and then when I got there they threw in 4 sets of breakfasts passes (which is way better than the Breakfast buffet at Holiday inn or a Hampton)

Hilton has always been higher on reward nights on average than IHG. However, the better IHG properties that used to be 15K points are now 30K. I used to be able to book the Chateau Lemoyne in the FG for 15K regularly, even for BCS/Mardi Gras but not now.

I'm pulling a MSY to SJU and using some Hilton Points at the Waldorf Astoria El Conquistador Resort in a couple weeks. It was 30k a night. Flight was $320 pp

So if I spend 100 bucks on a room I only get 1,500 points. It would take 20 nights of stays at that rate to get a free night. IHG based on points earned and points taken to get a free night is more like every 5-6 nights stay get a free room.
Also why I love using national rental. Once you achieve executive which isn't terribly difficult, you get a free car for every 5 days booked. Also the convenience of national far exceeds every other rental company.

and run bonuses quarterly. Hilton Honors isn't a terrible loyalty program. They hand out points like candy, but they charge an astronomical amount for their aspirational properties, and when I vacation on my points, I want to stay at those properties. Hilton can make that virtually worthless to do without living in a Hilton.
ETA: They also lack the aspirational properties compared to SPG and Hyatt.

Not really. All majors, for premium users, are very convenient. Get on bus, get in car, show license at gate, return car, email receipt. Very little interaction.

That's correct, but that is also a pretty crappy room. If you spend $200 bucks it is only taking you 10 nights. And if you run into a promotion where they are doing the double your points deal, it will only take 5 nights to get a free night. And the free stays that I have gotten were all $250 a night hotels. I always look at the % return in terms of dollar value that I am getting back based on what I spent. You can't just compare based on how many nights does it take to get a free night.
ETA: What works for one guy, might not work for the next. I like HHonors and have the Hilton Honors AMEX so I basically stay gold. I get free breakfast for me and my wife at every hotel I stay at. In Chicago that was a $15 p person buffet. Over the course of 5 mornings, that was an extra $150. I have also been given champagne and fruit/cheese twice because they weren't able to upgrade us to a suite for free. I have never had a problem booking any hotel that I wanted with points.

This was our backup plan over Cabo. I was not nearly as impressed. The hotel is from the 1940-1950's and they were in the process of renovating some of the rooms. Our room was pretty nice, but you could definitely tell the building was older. Some of the grounds had really gone to shite, and even their 'conference area' looked pretty bad. The manmade beach/pool area also was not the nicest.
I would suggest Cabo first, as the hotel is newer, and you have more access to better activities and resort amenities. If you have to go to PR, check out the Conquistador as another poster said. You can stay there the whole time, and drive in to old San Juan one day to walk around the small downtown area.
Also, someone mentioned SF. We were there last summer and you couldn't get a room for under $350 a night. So keep that in mind when using your points.

but go to Cabo. I am so pissed I couldn't take that trip.
Edit: I have to agree with the others on the value of the Hilton points. I used most of my leftover points on that trip. When it comes time to churn some more CC, I think I am going to go for Starwood next.

I know this is not in your criteria because of the SW thing but I blew my hilton wad at the Cavalieri in Rome then switched to Starwood. The Cavalieri breakfast would be worth flying the whole family to Rome.

Did not realize that. Our policy requires us to use national or enterprise and I've always had to use counter service for enterprise. Even with my first rental it was grab & go with national.
