When they deserve it, it's easier. Sometimes they don't though and it is very hard in those cases.

now laying someone off , especially around the holidays- is tough.

Fired a guy on Easter Sunday once and fired my cousin 2 days before Christmas last year. It was their fault though so I had no remorse about doing it.

As I was eating my sandwich I showed this thread to my sister in law who IS human resources. She said if she walked through one of her offices and saw someone reading this website she would fire them on the spot. And she fricking meant it.

If you ever get to a point where it doesn't suck, you don't have a heart.

I have had to fire three or four over the years. All women.

One, who after plenty of training on how to use our software, was totally faking it that she had become proficient. Took me two months to notice my receivables were down 30%. Then one week, she didn't show up for work for 2 days in a row. No phone call to me, and not taking my calls. A former staffer who had trained this person warned me all along that she didn't think this gal was going to work out, and she was right. Had to let her go.

People get themselves fired. I kind of actually enjoyed telling them they were gone, one less pain in my arse.

Then I certainly hope you aren't given any responsibility where ever you work. Stick to manning the cash register of the fry vat.

Have you had to look a man or woman in the eye and tell them they no longer have a job? No longer have a income to feed their kids? How did you handle it emotionally?

Yes.

A job is not a charity.

If you do not perform, then you do not get to keep your job.

If you want to continue to provide for your family, then do your job.

What sucks is having to lay someone off...

Firing someone and laying someone off are two different actions. When I've fired someone it was because they were crap for employees and by the time it got to that point I didn't care any longer. However when financial reasons dictate that someone has to go and they didn't do anything wrong I struggle with the situation.

I dont fire people. I just "fix the glitch". I find its best to just let these things work themselves out on their own.

Yes.
The hard ones are layoffs.
The hardest one are when someone tries, follows all the rules, has a good attitude and works hard, but just suck at the job.

Nope. I've had around 10 come and go due to better job opportunities. One quit because he was passed on a promotion. You'd have to do something really really bad for us to fire you.

Had a scare a while back where one of the higher ups wanted to lay off some of the older guys and replace them with lower paid younger guys. Fortunately that got squashed.

Many times. Don't have much respect for people who wont look someone in the eye, face to face, and dismiss an employee. It is a big deal -- not the Donald Trump TV show BS.
Most people who have never done it, really don't understand how big a deal it is. People's lives & families are involved.
