The issue I have with this is that he didn't have the balls to simply call and confront him. He may have gotten the same results, may have been ended it there. Instead he blasted an entrepreneur over the Internet for $4. And really, it was over a dollar.
So the dude who runs the business and was "gouging" (lack of a better term) it's customers is now the victim?

Am I the only one in this fricking thread that doesn't mind a dude putting a CRIMINAL BUSINESS PRACTICE on blast?

I'm sorry, I thought this was America.

Gouging is a strong term here. From 12.95 to 13.95 is less than a 7% increase. That is hardly gouging.

What word is appropriate?

I guess the website should have been updated, that much is true. Or had a statement that prices can change without notice. The HBS prof is being a douche.

He looks like the kinda guy that would have an anxiety attack in the court room because he can't handle real confrontation, so he does it via email

If you read upon Edelman's whole "truth in advertising" background, it makes more sense. There still had to have been a better way to go about this.

Dude is a terrible negotiator. He made a couple of pretty big (and rookie) mistakes and the restaurant guy outboxed him.

1) Went nuclear too quickly.

2) Threatened the authorities when he had no real standing to do so, restaurant guy then just tells the dude to pretty much piss off while he waits to be contacted.

I give his real world exercise a grade of D+.

An I the only person who checks the amount when I pay? This is some pretty basic math here.

Dude is a tool, but he may be running some type of real-life experiment or some shite.

Probably something similar. He just believes all negotiations fit into a prepackaged box when the reality is that people and situations are different and the one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work.

And the whole "championing all the others that got ripped off" is strange, as well. Negotiating is all about #1.

Guy is definitely being a prick about it, but he is right.

However, the proper way to handle such a grievance is get your 4 bucks back and move on. Trying to be anti-capitalist to a small mom and pop really sucks.

I work in academia myself. Some of these people who have never left a college campus in their adult life are hard to deal with. I'm looked down on because I spent 10 years in corporate America before coming back. I tell kids how the real world works instead of always theory.

This is petty on the part of the guy, he should have checked the receipt before paying. But, this also illustrates the point that in general Asian restaurant owners are stingy as shite. Good luck getting them to refund you for anything for any reason ever. This guy easily could have given him 4 bucks and ended it

I'm absolutely not saying he wasn't. In fact, I agree with all the "douche" comments.

But I'm not going to say that he wasn't right or shouldn't champion the cause.

I will say that I don't agree with the way he handled it, but when you're right, tact is a spectator's burden.
