Yep. Been there.
Actually I've been on both sides of this. I have a thing about ex's.

I think it probably happens quite a bit. Most people I know who have been together for many years have had at least one lengthy break-up before getting back together & making it stick.

there's always a reason why you broke up in the first place
Getting back with an ex is always tricky, and most likely will cause you some emotional anguish in the end

My wife and i broke up twice for a year in college. Ran into each other after the second time and we have been married 14 years.

Worked for my cousin. He was with a girl for about five years then one day wakes up and decides he might be gay. So he runs off and does that for awhile before we all chip in and get him some treatment. After a little treatment and a lot of prayer he gets cured and back with his girl and they're married six months later. Beautiful ceremony too, the best man even cried.

Has anyone broken up with a girlfriend from longer than 6 months and then
Also dated a girl for a few months in college, then again 9 years later, and we're married.
So it certainly can be done.

I've got friends who have had success rekindling a relationship. My experience was a failure.
We dated for 4 years, broke up for 4 years and then reconnected for a wretched 8 month relationship.
All the stuff that caused the first break-up, it doesn't suddenly go away. We never really dealt with our issues, just forgot about them due to the time apart.
In the end, it was a waste of time and I blew a shot with a really excellent girl by chasing my past.
Live and learn.

Plenty of people break up and get back together, often not wisely.

I broke up with my girlfriend of 2 years and then we got back together a month later. That was almost three years ago and I plan on proposing within the next year and a half. It can work.

Yes
Yes
It can work - people mature and whatever issues that caused the split dont seem so important now.
