In 2005, I saw exactly what you are worried about happen. A girl, probably high school or early college, was standing on an ice chest at Bacchus. She turned around for half a second to talk to someone behind her, and the very same 30 lb bag came flying from the float and nailed her in the head. I was able to help catch her from hitting the ground, but she still took quite a hit from the bag. The funniest part of the whole thing was when we all looked up to see what hit her, and a little black kid ran up and stole the bag right in front of all of us.
She should thank the tosser. Whilst concussed one can get drunk easier.

I've been hit in the face with about half a bag like that. Was with a group of pretty attractive girls, so we were getting a lot of crap thrown our way. I grab a beer and turn around to get smoked in the face. I look back at the float and give a WTF look only to have the drunk a-hole want to fight me . Apparently, it is not proper to get hit in the face and then not appreciate it. This happened at a Houma parade years ago. It's actually quite common there and you have to keep your head on a swivel. I just happened to stop paying attention for a second.

You should go to Endymion extravaganza. I didn't get banged up this year, but many around me did. We were in the center on the floor, right where the floats come in. Those big arse heavy beads do some damage. Wife got hit in the head a few times, had a welp on her back from one bead, and some other lady around me got nailed in the tooth. Father in law left bleeding from the forehead.
We were definitely in the line of fire. Where we were, teh floats were both entering the dome, and leaving the dome right in front of us so we took it from both directions.

Yeah, that shite looks crazy from the videos I've seen in the dome over the last two years.
I'm hearing stories that women are wearing hard hats now in the dome.

Yeah, it's rough. You gotta think, by that time most of the riders are pretty hammered and are just unloading all of their beads. And these aren't shitty little beads, these things have some weight to them. A tip, never keep glass on your table, those beads will shatter a bottle easily. And unless you are a good 50 feet + away from the barricades, you are never safe.
Last year i got clocked in the open eye with one of those really big beads. Couldn't see anything out of it for 30 minutes. Had to go to first aid and get it flushed out. As i was there, there were multiple people in there bleeding. One girl had to have had a broken nose.
We probably aren't going next year, but the next time we do go, safety glasses or a hard hat wouldn't be out of the question. Though if you are going that route, might as well paint a bullseye on yourself.
My phrase for saturday night, was to keep your head on a swivel, and constantly keep your eyes moving.

Sounds like the dumbest event in the world. Why would anyone fins that fun?

Overall it seems like a great time. It must be good as the event gets bigger and bigger. I'm guessing 15 to 20K attend.

Why did you have him do that?

It's pretty fun. It's just one giant party. Plus, it's fun to catch stuff from parades. Granted, getting injured isn't fun. And Steven Tyler can still rock. I was surprised. We left after about 3 songs into pit bull, which was around 3 am.
Last year was less injury prone, but we were in a safer spot.

The neworleanslocal facebook page as a pretty awesome video of a float from Endymion in the dome with a gopro camera. I can't figure out how to copy it or I would post it here.
