Austin Police Department Chief Art Acevedo claims his officers did nothing wrong. He says Stephen was the one who threw herself to the ground first. "She did the limp routine," he said at a press conference. "In 28 years of law enforcement I can tell you it happens all the time."
Acevedo says jaywalking is a serious issue in Austin. “I’d rather have everybody angry at me and my officers, then to see a young person lose their life needlessly,” he said at a press conference. “I’d rather be up here talking about this, than going to our 97th fatality involving a pedestrian or 1800th injury involving a pedestrian.”
He also said he's not "buying" theories that Stephen, who was jogging with earbuds in, didn't hear the officer the first time he tried to stop her.
On Thursday, officers stopped 28 people for jaywalking and gave 7 citations.

The nice thing about "rule of law" is that it eliminates emotional judgement about what is right and what is wrong.
The bad thing about "rule of law" is that it eliminates emotional judgement about what is right and what is wrong.
From a strictly legal standpoint, yes she violated the law right in front of cops who were detailed to ticket violators. Then she compounded her mistake by resisting b/c she was paying more attention to her music than to her surroundings.
OTOH, she almost certainly had no criminal intent.
Personally, I'd chalk it up to bad stuff that can happen when you aren't being careful. It could have been worse, people get run over and killed all the time doing exactly the same thing she did.

I do have issues with this though. Because IMo any body walking around in an urban setting with a rifle on his back is looking for or expecting trouble.
I agree, an assault rifle (or any long gun) is a bit over the top. That doesn't change the fact that it is legal and a cop can't stop and demand ID, even if it's to check if you're a convicted felon.

I rest my case. How long would you have dealt with him if you had given him some shite back?
The point is that the cop shouldn't have stopped him for no reason except to ask for ID to begin with.
The problem with this country, and the reason it's in the shitter, is APATHY. No one wants a problem or to have their time taken up by anything, even when it's something important as defending your Constitutional rights. Rights that our grandfathers fought and died for so you can just shite on them because it would've been easier.

I live a few blocks from where this arrest took place, and the police were apparently out in good numbers giving tickets to jaywalkers and stop-sign runners.
I do see a LOT of jaywalkers in this area, and I see a LOT of drivers who are speeding, not paying attention, etc.

She was arrested for looking like a tool.

But, but, but, I thought Austin, Texas was an oasis of tolerance and love in a desert of reactionary, Republican right-wingers???
Thought so too, but how can there be so many professional panhandlers in a city with so much left-wing love for their fellow man? They have four man teams of beggars working intersections like the Knights of Columbus on a tootsie roll drive.

Of course he's not. That would require the mental faculties to assess things differently from how you view them.
