Can we all agree the dugout Doug was a huge piece of shite. A coward and a traitor. I'm watching the pacific on history channel and was reminded of just how big a piece of shite dug out Doug was.
Why in the hell do some people see him as a hero. Abandoning his men on Batan and all the Marines he sacrifice retaking a island that didnt have to be taken. He did it out of pure pride. Sacrificed fathers, brothers and husbands for his pride. Not to mention he put himself in for a MOH for his bull shite heroic actions. 7 silver stars and a arse load more of stolen valor medals. And for some reason he has a monument at his grave site honing his **** arse as some american hero.

P.s. Screw you dug out doug

Wasn't he killed in action? A hero?

Buddy of mine's grandfather LINK served under him in Korea and apparently thought he was pretty much the worst human being alive.

I always liked his flair, though.

Agreed. Dude gets way too much credit. Curtis LeMay and Admiral Hausley did more to win the war.

I agree he was overrated and agree with most of what you said. However, he only left the Philippines on the direct order of the President himself. The reasons he was ordered out was (1) FDR wanted him in Australia to command what would they thought would be the defense of Australia and later the American counterpunch from the south once the Japanese advance had been stopped and (2) FDR did not want to give the Japanese the propaganda victory of capturing one of our highest ranking officers.

Ok, Darth... now let's get into WHY FDR wanted him out. Let's discuss his complete and utter failure at defending the Philippines in the first place.

It is scary that MacArthur was almost given the authority to launch nuclear weapons on China during the Korean War.

And that's BS too. FDR and G. Marshall wanted him somewhere out of the way... at the time they thought Australia was the least threatening place to send him.

If it wouldn't have been for his popularity (due to his own propaganda) he would have been shitcanned and out of the war completely after his frick up in the Philippines.

You're exactly right. He did fail to defend the Philippines even though, counting Filipino forces, he had more men under his command than did General Homma for the Japanese. Although I will say his forces were woefully under-equipped comparative to the Japanese, especially in armor & artillery. And on top of that, while the Japanese could resupply their forces, MacArthur was totally cut off from any resupply.

Still, he squandered basically his entire air force on the first day of the war when he allowed the Japs to catch virtually all his aircraft parked wingtip to wingtip on the ground, which to me of all his mistakes is the most inexcusable considering the hours warning he had to get ready.

Also, In my opinion he fell back to his final, last ditch stand position on the Bataan peninsula too fast and allowed much of his supplies to fall into the Japanese hands. He could have fell back in a much more orderly fashion, conserving his men and supplies. But he didn't. And in the end, I'm not sure it would have made much difference anyway seeing how the US had no relief force ready to come to the aid of the Philippines anyway. Bottom line is that no matter what MacArthur did, the Philippines were going to fall. Still, that does not excuse his poor generalship during the campaign.

I'm usually not as critical of MacArthur for his performance during WWII. I'm usually more critical of what he did in Korea. He was out of control.

You're looking at the matter with the benefit of hindsight. Yes, MacArthur royally fricked up in the Philippines and hastened it's fall with his ineptitude. But in 1942, the picture in Washington of what was happening there was very incomplete. Basically they thought he was cut off from resupply (which he was) and was facing an overwhelmingly larger force (which he wasn't).

As for Australia, at that time, with Japan on the advance seemingly everywhere in the Pacific, Australia was not viewed as a backwater but rather a highly strategic focal point of the war to come. And it was assumed at that time that Australia would face invasion in the very near future. Remember, not only did Washington send MacArthur there, they also dispatched the 1st Marine Div there, which at that time was basically the only ground forces we could muster in the entire theater.
