I believe the figure I last heard is that .5% of the federal budget goes to the "farm" bill. Of that minuscule amount more than 2/3 goes to food stamps, actually. After that much of what's left is spent running the government farm agencies. Finally we're left with the tiny amount that actually gets to farmers.

I can promise you, the federal budget isn't out of whack due to farm subsidies. We're fricking child's play compared to other countries such as China who up until recently had their internal price of cotton at well over a dollar a pound while we might be struggling in the mid-60 cents per pound.

The biggest thing farmers get in the U.S. is (semi)affordable insurance. The old quota and counter cyclical payment systems are long gone. Crop prices aren't propped up by the government anymore. I seriously don't see where people get off thinking that farmers are fricking welfare kings.

So, these guys steal $30 million.

They'll get 1 year in a federal penetentiary, max.

Low class thugs steal 200 bucks from a convenience store and get 5 years in a shitty state prison

Yep. There is a ton of white collar crime in the agriculture business. We gotta eat so people look the other way while a few big names take in millions of taxpayer dollars.

Farmers generally are impossible to prosecute too

and guaranteed crop loans regardless of credit history, etc. Tell the whole story if you're going to discuss it.

I talked about this last night with a guy very close to the situation. He explained how it all got discovered when one of the Larrys bought a stolen tractor from Texas for $15k. The Feds started investigating because the theft crossed state lines and eventually uncovered this hornets nest. Greed strikes again!

What the hell are you talking about? You have to pay the loans back. You won't get more loans if you default, I can assure you.

I just read that $25 billion was spent on farm subsidies NATIONWIDE last year. Of that, $19 billion went to crop insurance, disaster relief, ARC and PLC (which are effectively disaster relief). So roughly 2/3 of farm subsidies is JUST to make insurance affordable and to pay basic bills in the event of a hurricane or market collapse. The balance mostly went towards (inter)national marketing and research. It's not like it's going in the farmers' pockets.

And this tiny amount of money ($25 billion) is going to a sector of the economy that produces ~$1 trillion in GDP a year. As a comparison, the U.S. spent $71 billion on food stamps last year. How much return are we getting on that investment, eh?

There are roughly 325 million people in the U.S. currently. Spread out equally over them all (I know, it's not) that equates to nearly $77 a person to have what is literally the most efficient, safe, and stable food supply in the world. Fricking peanuts, folks.

the biggest thing people don't get. However I think if the subsidies all were zapped, the markets would correct

Yep, the guy that told me that is extremely close to the situation. Personally knows the farmers and the bankers on a first name basis.

Lots of farmers on here. The subsidies are not all bad but there are too many of them and yes as with any other government program a good bit of abuse.
