How a local entrepreneur keeps his neighborhood safe with a privatized police force. I know this has been discussed before but the NY Times just did this piece.

"I kind of felt like Bruce Wayne"

Edited the title to bring more attention to THE real life Bruce Wayne.

So he's a real life Bruce Wayne because he called himself a real life bruce Wayne?

Well I'm a real life Superman then

It's almost as if I made that headline to attract attention to my thread instead of being factually accurate...

Damn. that's solid pay for a detail.

If he wants to be specific, he is a real life Oracle. Meaning he sits and looks at screens and then tells Batman where to go. In this case Batman is the NOPD off duty officers driving the golfcarts.

I never looked into this before. I didn't realize he was funding this.

You should put that it's Sydney Torres in your title.

Torres’s security detail is unique not just in the prominence of its beat — a major American city’s most-visited neighborhood — but also in the fact that it was conceptualized and financed by a single individual

... who got filthy rich from a FEMA contract to clean up after Katrina. I love and hate that this douche got fricking RICH by doing things the government should be doing and is already being paid to do.

So is this a weird combo uber, neighborhood watch, and private security companies?

It works here in the caribbean, the resorts and nice neighborhoods all have private security guards, dog patrols, and off duty cops on patrol. Crime is much lower since the bike and dog patrols began in march and I actually feel reasonably safe walking around at night. The St. Maarten government is almost as corrupt and disorganized as the NOLA city government so it could work there, but I have a feeling that it will quickly be labeled racist and shutdown.

Yeah, that was borderline thievery. but at least he did well at the job he was paid for. I have to hand it to the guy, he has been very successful in his endeavors.

That's the funny part! He takes basic services - trash, police - and instead of doing it really shitty like the Orleans Parish government, actually performs the work. So while I can hate him for his stupid hair, clothes, attention whoring ways, etc. I can't really fault his business plan.

He is so rich and I commend him for trying to do something, but he's a giant doucher.

A safe French Quarter IS good for all of New Orleans though. Tourism keeps the city moving and tourists predominantly go to one place.

ETA:

If they get the funding to continue this for 5 more years, the effects will be much greater IMO. It will begin to be known to criminals as a place to avoid due to heavy patrol presence.

French Quarter really does need to thrive for New Orleans to thrive IMO.

Exactly.

He sees how shitty the city is at doing common, every day things and he does them better and gets paid a shite ton to do it.

More power to him. Still a tool
