That may or may not be true/ But I won't be overprotective simply because of it. I'd rather take the 1 in 1 million chance that something bad could happen to them than guarantee that they'll be useless pussies with no self reliance or initiative or problem solving skills because I raised them in a bubble.

I only worry about unaware texters and drivers...used to folks were kinda aware driving in neighborhoods, now every Suburban driving 40 year old thinks that it's time to get on Facebook as soon as you get in the neighborhood....gotta tell someone what they did from 4:58 til 5:21

Free Range Children!!! I love the term!! While it is ok to eat free range chickens it is a derogatory term for humans.

Let kids be kids and experience the beauty of life. Have an upvote!!

How old where your kids when you let them go off by themselves? It's something I struggle with, and I still get a little nervous if I can't see them at the park. But the oldest is only six.

As a former "free range" child myself, I see multiple mistakes here and not a single one of those by the parents. Our society sucks, but hey, I need to get back to my smartphone and update forty social media accounts. Later.

Five. By school standards under 1.5 miles is walking distance. Know your neighbors, know your neighborhood.

If the cops had taken every unsupervised 10-year-old into custody when I was 10, taking 10-year-olds into custody would have been their full time job. It's pretty stupid how parents hover over their kids 24/7 the way they do now. It's beyond insane that parents are actually being investigated for NOT doing it. Good for these parents who have the sense to let their kids be independent enough to play in the local neighborhood park without having to go with them and watch their every move.

I don't think I agree with the government getting involved, but I also don't think I'd let my 10 year old child supervise a 6 year old.

This is the only correct answer.

6 is a little too young

10 is fine in some areas

I grew up riding bikes to friends houses starting around 8-9 I think but I grew up in a pretty safe area where everyone knew each other.

My favorite part of this is Maryland enforcing laws that don't exist... IIRC state law dictates min. ages for being left home alone and in a car... Not outside.

Also confining/transporting someone else's kids without food for three hours sounds a lot like kidnapping. I wouldn't be surprised if a lawsuit was in the works.

I have an 8 and a 6 year old. I'd let them roam around the neighborhood till their hearts are content without supervision if I could them off of the goddamned video games.

6 yrs old seems kind of young to be out without a parent. What is that like 1st grade? And the 10 yr old is in 5th? Parents shouldn't lose the kids but that's a little too young. Of course that is from someone who lives in Nola. Probably safer wherever this took place

As others, I grew up roaming all over neighborhoods. Hell, an entire town and country side from like age 10 up.

But it is different these days. Especially if you have girls. I raised holy hell on mine a year or so ago BC they left without notice. Only 2 blocks away but it was just after a girl in Missouri was abducted and murdered. That girl was only a block from her house and ppl were outside watching when it happened.

So while I wan't to give them greater freedom, I tend to be overly protective.

Whoever said this was spot on:

times have changed. It's not the criminals you worry about, it's your government.

That's the quote I meant to include in my first post.

These parents who baby their children are doing a huge disservice to their kids. It's already manifesting itself in the teenagers of today who are completely clueless.

I agree. I remember when I was around 10 (or younger) my parents let me ride my bike wherever I wanted. I would go to the nearest convenience store and buy candy, Icees, etc. Ride to friends houses, whatever, no big deal.

I was never in danger and I didn't even wear a helmet! It was the 80's and I don't think bike helmets for kids even existed......(Well, I'm sure they did, but I never saw one).

It was only a matter of time before a gun-toting gang kidnapped them.

I applaud the parents.

By the time I was in junior high, I would get home from the bus stop at 3pm, my mom who was a school teacher got home at 3:30. She would kick me out of the house as soon as she got home. Would tell me to go outside and play or meet some friends, ride my bike, whatever. Just go outside, no sitting in front of playstation, be home by dark for dinner.
