Free Range Children Taken Into Custody For Playing in Park Alone

Basically a couple's 2 children were taken into custody by police and given to CPS b/c they were playing in a park a mile from their house alone. The children were ages 10 and 6. They had their parent's permission to go to park and play. No one contacted the parents once they took children into custody.
I applaud these parents for not buying into the fear mongering of the media and the overwhelming amount of helicopter parents. I was running around the streets of Uptown when I was a kid. Walking to Audubon park, taking the streetcar to McDonalds with friends etc. My parents talked to me about the dangers out there and instructed me on how to protect myself. It's safer nowadays than it was when I was growing up.
These parents who baby their children are doing a huge disservice to their kids. It's already manifesting itself in the teenagers of today who are completely clueless.

what happened to "be home by the time the streetlights come on"?

CPS shouldn't take the kids from the parents.
But those are some shitty parents. You let your 6 year old run around unsupervised with your 10 year old? That's dumb. Be a better parents and shite like this wouldn't happen.

The good old days, they are long gone.

My friends and I rode bikes all over Metairie when we were 8-12 years old. Would disappear for hours and no one called the cops...

A mile is a pretty long way, but I was over in the next neighborhood on my bike by myself when I was 7-8 yrs old. I'd meet up with other kids too. We never saw a parent and just had to be home by dark.
Kids were on milk cartons all the time back then too. Lots of abductions happening. Still, we played.

There's nothing dumb about it. Quit being such a pussy.

Fo sho, we did it all the time and my brother was only 8. Better times.

A mile really isn't all that far. When we were on our bikes we'd go 5-6 miles sometimes and we were in that age range.
I think kids walk a mile to school quite often.

As a father of two kids, I wouldn't let them do that either. But, when I was 6 I used to walk from mid city, down esplanade to school everyday (McDonough 15 in the quarter). Never had a problem other than being jumped by a few "runners".

Yall don't see a difference between a group of 8-10 year olds riding around on bikes and a 6 year old in a park?

I don't think I agree with the government getting involved, but I also don't think I'd let my 10 year old child supervise a 6 year old.

Yeah no shite. Maybe for all the fat fricks that post on this site it is, but the average 6 and 10 year olds can run a mile with breaking a sweat.
More parents should let their children leave the house unsupervised. Today's youth who do nothing but live in their little bubble with mommy and daddy till they get their driver's license will freak the frick out the first time they have to solve a problem without mommy and daddy within eyesight of them.

Jump to extremes much?
The kid was 6. You get your licence at 17 now. His parents can let the 10 year old hang out with a group.
When I was a kid my parents had no problem with me going out with friends, but if I was 6 and I was like hey i'ma peace out and run around the neighborhood of course my parents would've said no.
Of course, my parents cared about me so there's that.

Up vote for you for reminding the OT they are mostly a bunch of cheeto finger mouth breathing idiots.

I'm sort of a overprotective dad. I know it's not a good thing, cause I grew up being street smart, and they aren't. Also, I know them living a sheltered life isn't a good thing, but it's hard to let go.

Well maybe they trusted their 10 year old to take care of his little brother. This really isn't a big deal. I read all the time on this board how the world is safer now than it ever has been and violent crime hasn't been this low in decades. Unless you live in the ghetto I see no problem letting your kids out of your eyesight. Even if it's a six year old. I mean, he had his big brother looking after him.

They weren't really out running the streets. They walked to the park a mile away from their house. Their parents knew where they were and they were supposed to be home at a certain time. Seems like their teaching them responsibility and self sufficiency.
I did ride my bike to 1st grade by myself. It was almost a mile and my parents loved me. They just didn't smother me or turn me into a clueless, sheltered pussy.

The first thing I said was that the government and CPS never should have gotten involved.
That doesn't change my opinion that they are shitty parents. I have no problem with a group of 10 years olds riding bikes. I did that. We ran around all the time unsupervised.
But 10 year olds are not responsible. He sees some friends in the park, they tell him to ditch his brother, he does, now your 6 year old is alone and scared.
10 year olds are not responsible. No matter how you acted as a kid. Kids make mistakes.
In short, government shouldn't have been involved, parents still suck.
