Ford F150 and ecoboost - is it as good as advertised/is it worth it?

I am looking at getting a 'new' truck and have heard some things about the F150's with the ecoboost.

I know it will move quicker but does it really push your MPG up near 30? This seems like a to-good-to-be-true type thing.

I have also heard it is a waste of money to pay the little extra in some cases for it.

Will only get a 4x4 if that makes any difference.

have read conflicting reports online and was wondering what the OT had to say about it

It is more powerful and faster.

No, not close.

I'm looking as well and as far as I can tell it's about 1-1.5 miles per gallon better than the 5.0 . The acceleration is quite noticeably better, IMO. It's also very quiet.

See I knew that had to be BS, but the person that told me knows his shite about cars and I trusted his opinion to be correct.

I think I would still get the ecoboost if it came down to one with and one without if the price difference wasn't too ridiculous

Are you kidding or do you not know anything about cars? The EPA ratings are 17/21. Those are as optimistic as it gets.

It's just wrong for a truck to have a turbo v6

When it comes down to it, I think it's about an $800 difference - post negotiation. I think Ford advertises the ecoboost 4x4 to get 21 hwy. In my research and talking with friends, I think 20-20.5 is more accurate. The same with the V8 - it's about a mile per gallon less than is shown on the sticker.

The real difference is how quiet and quick it is to me.

You talking about the current 3.5L Ecoboost or the new 2.7L Ecoboost for the 2015's? They haven't released the numbers for those yet. Some speculation it'll be near 28 mpg.

Haven't been on the OB in a long while, but does anyone have experience with the repair and maintenance of the turbo? Or are these trucks too new for anyone to know how they hold up?

Turbocharged engines are fun, but usually costly down the road.

I'm getting 17.5 mpg now but I do a ton of city driving. Get 22-24mpg on long drives (gulf shores etc)

their turbos are very small and do not produce a lot of boost. Because of this there is no lag at all and max torque comes in at 2500 rpm's.

Internals use ceramic center bearings that are supposed to make the turbo bearing seals last a lot longer than standard turbos

Seems like those Ecoboost half ton trucks should be getting better mpg.

I used to have a 2002 Duramax (6.6 liter) and would get 17 mpg in town, and got 19.2 mpg on a trip home from Destin.

ETA: thanks meauxjeaux2. Interesting.

Looking at the 2015's and was thinking of going with the 3.5L Ecoboost because I seem to remember hearing good things. But the last dealer I talked to said they "always had problems". And to get either the 5.0 V8 or the new 2.7L Ecoboost. I'm wary of getting a first year engine though.

I meant to start this thread last night in fact. Wanted to see if anyone here had first hand problems with their 3.5L. Those I know personally that have the 3.5L have nothing but good things to say about them.
