For the first time "No Religion" has topped a survey of Americans' religious identity, according to a new analysis by a political scientist. The non-religious edged out Catholics and evangelicals in the long-running General Social Survey.

quote:

Ryan Burge, a political scientist at Eastern Illinois University and a Baptist pastor, found that 23.1% of Americans now claim no religion.

Catholics came in at 23.0%, and evangelicals were at 22.5%.

The trend picked up in the mid 90s when “no religion” was south of 10%. It has been at the expense mostly of mainline Protestantism.

mainline Protestantism.

Those denominations are basically dead. Amazing what happens when you don’t anchor yourself to millennia old core tenets of your faith. Pope Francis would be wise to pay attention to that.

Now, Evangelicals are and will lose numbers too. Cultural Christianity isn’t long for this country, for better and worse.

Christianity, Judism, Islam, Hindu, pretentious atheist

These are different religions.

Different sects dont count as different religions. As much as you feel superior to other Christian sects, its still the same religion.

Young adults who attend religious services more than once a month are about 40 percent more likely to report that they are very happy, compared with their peers who are not religious at all, according to our analysis of the GSS. (People with very infrequent religious attendance are even less happy than never-attenders; in terms of happiness, a little religion is worse than none.)

We were told by atheists and agnostics for generations that human happiness can only be expanded when the church is abolished.

Well, the results are in, and the opposite is true

People are finally realizing that they do not need a church to have a relationship with a higher power

I think the poll is faulty. Religion is good, imo. Churches are bad.

I am not that religious, but it always irks the hell out of me when agnostics and atheists believe the decline in religion is some sort of panacea for all societal ills.

It's not the case. Evidence is emerging that the opposite is true.

Millenials are the least religious group in the history of mankind, yet are by far the most moribund and depressed.

They are shooting their brains out at rates never seen since the 30s.
