I've hated Kanye ever since he made those stupid and ignorant comments.

He already wasnt on good terms with the dept pre Katrina since he was never around, barely taught classes, and had few grad students...you know, the stuff professors are expected to do. Additionally, he would spout off without passing it by any superiors etc. that all being said, LSU also handled it terribly and several people over there should lose their jobs for the black eye they've brought on the university not necessarily for the basis of their decisions, but for how they handled them.

None of this would have happened if van heerden would have told the corps what they wanted to hear.

Just another example of political bullying in the us

I have read Ivor van Heerden's book and some of his research I have also listened to him speak. Smart man with an up hill battle.

Why did the fact that he owned a boat even matter in the cort hearing. Don't 25% of people on the coastline own boats?

but based on what I'm reading it sounds like the Professor just emailed these people out of the blue spouting his expertise and knowledge of the subject. No one is ever going to take too kindly to that.
well i think there is way more to it than that. the Hurricane center boots up its models weeks in advance when a hurricane comes close to the US. The center is on high alert and reports everything it finds during a hurricane event, prior, during, and after the event. And i think once the wrong info was brought forth he spoke out against it.

Most of the RNR teachers are exactly like this. Some teach one semester out of the year and are in the field the rest of the time. Some only have one or two grad students, while others have 5 or 6. Most only teach one class also

It is just a small college, no need for them to be there all of the time and they are required to turn in 3 papers a year to a scientific journal so they do a bunch of that type work.

I think this is what happens when a university goes out and grabs a highly regarded expert who moves from school to school. These people don't teach, they basically affiliate with a given school and continue about their way traveling, attending lectures and headlining conferences, and developing existing research. The university gets a halo effect from having the nationally or internationally known figure, but its not like they are these integral members of the department, taking up a position and staying until retirement. They are often here and gone within three to five years.

Part of his argument was that he was adversely affected financially.

Well yeah he was because he had to hire a lawyer, lost his job, and now might be blackballed at other universities. I would think he was affected financially.

Maybe the boat was already paid for. Does that mean that he should get rid of it due to the LSU debacle?

I agree, plus, as has been stated..... many people who work on the coast/wetlands own boats because they need them much as a salesman needs a car.

Hell, he also owned a house and car. LSU should be off scot-free!

I was just answering the guy's question. When you make a monetary claim like that you typically have to state your assets. That's all.

Yeah it is a shame that LSU basically violated the spirit of academic freedom and caved to political pressure.

But what do you expect? LSU is a political institution - always has, always will be.

it seems to me that LSU wouldve gained national attention if they reported the truth instead of silencing the guy. such a shame

He was also spot on just 2 months after the BP spill in predicting the aftermath (that it would not kill civilization as we know it).

See the Times/Pic article.

As far as his retaliation- whistleblower trial, it was scheduled for tomorrow.
