If you are just figuring out that the government knows what you are doing and where you are at all times then I can't help ya. Social media is old news, your cellphone gives them all the info they need now. With the exception of throwing it in a river there is no way to keep it from transmitting data on you. That includes having it turned off or pulling the SIM card.

Exactly. Please tell me if you know someone who has been effected by this? Someone who was just living life. Not bothering anyone. Not digging into shite they shouldn't have been in. Not breaking any laws. I know no one in my life has been effected by this. Do you?

Hate to break it to you cupcake, but the MSM started the fake news movement in an attempt to discredit new media outlets they disagreed with. And a preemptive attack on the leaks that were about to be published at WikiLeaks.
You are the perfect example of how that works on low information citizens.

I don't social media at all...well..I do have a LinkedIn I never post on or look at....and this thing here which is anonymous...and my life is grand...
I don't understand the fascination and the need some have of posting their random crap thoughts and what they had for dinner...on the internet.
I don't know about government surveillance but I don't need to worry about it...
put down your phones people.
(I post on TD.com on a gov't computer...hehe)

I'm astonished at the amount of people that do not realize this.
OP shouldn't be chastised for bringing up his concerns about tech companies and the creep towards totalitarianism. Unlike many, I see companies like Facebook and Google as evil. They have colluded to such a degree with the NSA prior to the Edward Snowden leaks that I consider them nothing more than an arm of our massive surveillance state, just as private defense contractors are an arm of the military industrial complex.
The idea that the state has the power to track every citizen and access their web and consumer history at the mere click of a button should worry us all, regardless of whether or not they're actually doing it. And Facebook and Google have mastered the art of appearing trendy, liberal and cool to young people, while enabling and assisting some of the most illiberal and authoritarian agencies within our government.
No one, and I mean no one, should be mocked for trying to protect our privacy.

If it's true, the easiest spy op in history. People post EVERYTHING to Facebook.

Except for they didn’t say Lickitty Splits data from this day and time. So everybody that was in that area is now a subject to that investigation based solely on being in the vicinity of a crime, nothing more. Do you believe that’s a search you shouldn’t be protected from? There’s zero reason for the government to be able to ask for this information. It’s too broad. Additionally, law enforcement oftentimes request this information without a warrant.

I'm not mocking him. I'm just astonished people didn't realize these companies were data mining everything you do.
How do they think targeted ads work?
And I worry less about the privacy issue, and more about the ability to be manipulated. We are just now seeing the beginnings of these huge campaigns to manipulate people with fake news. It is only going to get worse and less easy to identify in the future.

Good post.
Fake news on social media is a HUGE issue.

Facebook was "weaponized" to help Trump win the election. By all accounts it was quite effective as people believed and still believe much of the garbage passed around (mostly false attacks on Clinton - pizzagate, Seth whatever his name is whose parents are now suing fox news for promoting false stories, etc). Seems a significant number of people are having some difficulty recognizing bullshite.
So as to avoid a populace influenced by both dishonest domestic (fox news) and foreign actors (russia) disinformation on Facebook is being cracked down on.

I am often "pretty damn comfortable" (if you know what I mean) when I'm on my computer at home. Unfortunately, they won't be very impressed.

all your searches on google and yahoo and the like are cached and catalogued and sold to third parties and provided to the government.
Not sure why the government would be interested in my searches. I doubt I've found any "unique" style of porn that 50 million other people haven't found.

There is almost zero news in America. MSNBC and CNN are no different from Fox. Fake news didn't begin with Facebook. It began when news outlets traded reporting the news for opinion punditry that masquerades as fact. It continues with news media blackouts and self-censorship of news stories that challenge American political orthodoxies. There is a reason why Americans are the least politically informed public in the Western world.

I still haven't figured out why men feel the need to be on facebook.

I disagree. IMO, no news network is in Fox's league. Fox is frankly not a news network at all. It is propaganda.

I just think it's funny that people are surprised by this
