My parents divorced when I was about 5. They just weren't happy together anymore, but they are still friends and both remarried.

what pisses me off is when things are going smoothly and the people are developing their new patterns/routine (which is the scariest part and i tell them this), and then a family member or friend interjects him/herself and tries to act like they can "get more" or whatever and then all hell can break loose

Is this really the cause for most divorces in your opinion? By far, the most significant majority of divorces are initiated by women. Do you think that this may be due to any other reasons?

Yes, mine went very smooth. 14 years later and still very few issues arise. Total bill was $500 and we never stepped foot in a courtroom or saw a judge.

i think marriage has been idealized to such a degree, esp for women
the reality is just a lot different. how we view marriage is nothing like it was back in the day

How about personal responsibility? How about honoring your vows. How about not making individual personal happiness the be all end all of life? It's hard. It takes work and commitmwnt...sadly people don't care about that anymore.

Why did they get married to begin with? People don't change that much, there is a unrealistic expectation of what marriage is supposed to be, and today's mindset about divorce makes it too easy to walk away when the marriage encounters a rough spot.

Only way it makes a rough divorce is when one party thinks he/she is better than the other. When one thinks that they are entitled to everything accumulated during the marriage.

Did the children turn out ok, like genuinely ok.
I'm a product of a pretty ugly divorce...to the outsider, my life probably looks pretty great, but in reality, I've got some pretty hefty baggage.

<====== This guy right here thanks God everyday he escaped a marriage that ultimately brought out the worst in both of us. We are both much happier. It's been 6 years. The first year of divorce is always the worst but things settle down as everyone finds their "new normal"

My folks split up when I was 12, it was very amiable. Split everything down the middle. They lived about 4 blocks from one another. My sister and I would walk from my dad's house to my mom's house and vice versa. Yes, the documentary Divorce Corp is bad. However, that doesn't represent all divorces.
