The problem is unions, it's just not going to be possible a lot of places to get engineers in craft spots. It would require a culture change.

I agree. Hell, all I did was red lining and some entry estimating. They had some BAD machinery in the shop that I would have loved to get my hands on.

As a surveyor/field engineer for 20+ years I can attest to the incompetence if the newer crop of engineers. I regularly piss them off when I change their shite so it will work when built.

It doesn't even have to be a crafts job. Just anything. Fixing lawnmowers would be a huge step in the right direction. It's not what you're going to school for, but it's shite you need to know. It's problem solving mechanical shite.

Shocker, a person with 20 years experience knows more than someone right out of school. How do you not get that you should know more and the new grad shouldn't know what you know?

I hope you use it as a teaching opportunity with the ones who want to learn.

I think even the liberal arts homos need to do this

You've been asking for a week without an answer? That shows me you don't have the respect of the guys on the site. Maybe its your fault.

Every situation should be thought of as a teaching opportunity. In that situation, the kids learn how to deal with changes and people whining. Might take them 10 years to finally grasp it, but it is an opportunity to learn

screw locks, nails and glue?

They should pursue it in their free time to help them succeed, I know I'd rather use my internship time getting a foot in the door somewhere.

Do yal find that the current crop of engineers and field workers lack common sense these days? I'm sure I was like that at the start as well, but lately this kids are driving me crazy.
It's everyone, any and every age.

I can't decide what I want to eat for lunch. Should I do engineering or accounting?

every generation thinks it's smarter than the one that came before it and wiser than the one that came after

True, most kids in my engineering classes these days look like they haven't seen the sun in two weeks.
All computer smart which is good, but you have to be able to go out and use your hands sometimes and more importantly your mouth.. To communicate (which is a foreign thing to some of them)
