There's a lot of reasons. Some people like teaching and making a difference. Its somewhat stable and the benefits are awesome. There's actually a lot of opportunity for advancement, a lot of teachers are not interested in administration.

You want an enormous headache of a job? Become a public school administrator.

less, but it has its perks.

Such as?

Not having to pay into social security and being able to retire at 52, are pretty big perks.

Do 30 years at a public school collect a pension in your early 50s, then go work at a private school. Make between 85-100K for working 10 months isn't bad.

Thanks not a bad deal. And wouldn't be great if you were the PE teacher and just had to play dodge ball and basketball for 30 years in order to qualify for pension.

That is gold as far as career paths.

My girls that have experience, but literally no education, not even GEDs absolutely make more than this.

Of course they all have pretty smiles, so if they can answer phones and make clients happy, it's a win for everyone.

I have to ask.. why does she do it? Does she just prefer teaching that much more over an office job?

I always find that an odd comment. It's as if no one should want to be teachers knowing that the starting pay and earning potential is far behind what is found in many other fields. Yet, teachers are among the most important jobs in our society.

For staters, it was her first full time teaching job after school, and at the time most school districts were not hiring. She had been working as a recruiter at a for profit school while looking for teaching positions. It actually paid well, and had great potential for advancement. She was very good at it, but it wasn't very fulfilling. We eventually moved to a new area for my work, and she was offered that Catholic school job.

Sure it payed much less, but she was finally doing what she wanted to do. She's home now with our son because we can't really justify putting him in daycare with that type of salary.

Sure, she is incredibly frustrated at times because she works her arse off as a teacher. This includes staying several hours late each day, and going in on weekends. This is why I laugh when people talk about how much less teachers work.

She's Type A, very bright, and sometimes I secretly wish she had gone to law school like her sister. She'd be much better compensated for burning the midnight oil. My wife is considering public school jobs when she goes back, but now she's unsure because we live in EBR again.

Hey, I'm not knocking her. I'm glad we have teachers doing this. I just wonder what the ones who never found a husband are doing to stay afloat. $25k is nothing. My parents still pay my health and car insurance and I have a paid off car, and I STILL could never survive on $25k.

Trust me, I was still in the starting salary range in my job too, so it still felt tight for us. A lot of young teaches that aren't married live with their parents to save on bills.

I get that people like to knock teachers on this board. They also like to bitch about the quality of education.

If the joke is "those who can't do, teach." Perhaps we might attract more of the doers and weed out the lazy teachers if they actually provide reasonable compensation.

you'd just have to cut back on some things, 25k is about the per capita income in Louisiana so there are plenty of people that do it.

roommate
minimal eating out
drink natural light

ETA: most of the private teachers I know do it because they enjoy the kids and have husbands that make plenty of money

Teaching is not bad gig. Some people really love teaching and do it for reasons other than money. If their husband/wife makes good money, then it can be a good deal. Being a teacher is great if you have kids since you will be off for all the same holidays and the summer. I have a cousin that has retired from two separate school systems and collects retirement from both, with both him and his wife's insurance included. He was/is an outstanding teacher and I really couldn't imagine him doing anything else. He loves doing it and it shows in the results that he gets from his students. It's not always about the money.

This was more my intended question.

I can't imagine anyone in BR can afford a safe place for themselves (especially with a child) on $25k. So I suppose most private school teachers are coming from a dual income household.

I understand not having aspirations to make six figures. I mean, I'd love it as much as anyone, but my happiness is more important. That said, being able to survive comfortably vs. being poor is more than just desiring money. I mean, $25k puts your child in free/reduced lunch range.. and that range isn't very forgiving so you know you're low when you're in it.

They can always tutor for extra cash and do something during the summer. I know a teacher that works a seasonal job during the summer for good extra money.

Well I actually meant dealing with mostly republican kids but those are great answers too.

One of our really good family friends was a teacher at a private school. She was making $23K.

She recently switched to a public school and is now making $45K
