My bad, I forgot that your kid's school represents ever private school in the state. I'll retract my previous statement then.

How do you know this? You've personally looked up all of their certificates to make sure they have them and that they are current?

I get it, you're trying to justify spending that money on private school education, but take a realistic approach and think about where the better teachers will be attracted.

Sorry I forgot to give you my sources. I am a public school teachers who provides special education services to several area private schools. I am also mentoring several adults during their certification process as their mentor teacher. Many of them work at a private schools. Is that a good enough source for you?

I don't need to "try" and justify it. I can look at the kids that go to public schools and compare them to mine if I wanted to do that. You think the better teachers that really want to teach and aren't in it just for a pay check want to deal with public school problems?

To be honest many of them can't handle the public school so they go hide at private schools.

I did the math the other day and I work over 100 more days a year than a public school teacher in New Orleans. Be happy with your 36k a year.

I know it is lower, but I doubt it is THIS low. Unless it's like preschool. Secretaries with no education make more than this.

My wife made <$25k as a 4th grade teacher with a Master's at a Catholic school in Northeast Texas.

I got my Bachelor's from LSU in Elementary Ed.
Taught in Public and Private (catholic)
Public I started at $45K
Private offer was $32K but they gave me a side title/job of PR for them and bumped me up to $38K

Been out of teaching since 2009 so it may have changed.

No actually it is that low. Private schools have significantly lower pay. However the draw is typically better crop of students and more parental involvement. Also a lot of private school teachers are retired public school teachers.

Heck my wife hits her 30 years at like age 52, so she can draw retirement and turn around and teach at a private school and really make some money.

Some of the EBR charters make a little more, 41-46k depending on exp., but buyer beware.

Charters are known for paying their teachers more than public.

You went from $45,000 a year to $38 a year? You must have a trust fund or something.

Also knew of a few who went into teaching right when we graduated ~7-8 years ago and they started at 42k IIRC. They would not do private school in the BR area because the pay wasn't high enough.

Best friend hit the teaching jackpot. She teaches art in a nearby parish. She is a "floating" teacher, so she hops between 3 schools over there. But each school only has like 1 hour of art per day. So she teaches a really enjoyable subject to little kids (we're talking finger painting and noodle art) for a mere 3 hours per day and she makes mid-40s.

If your in BR, I wouldn't even consider public schools. My mom teaches at a public middle school in Lafayette and makes 8k than she would make at St. Pius and its at a decent middle school. Depends on the situation.

I have to ask.. why does she do it? Does she just prefer teaching that much more over an office job?

I made $31k at my first job out of college where I basically just waited to be told to make some copies and I watched Netflix the rest of the day When I switched jobs, I had way more work for the same pay, but I was in a sales position with commission. Plus we got $200-$500 bonuses in our checks damn near every other paycheck. I have to wonder why someone would put up with teaching for such low pay.. unless they just teach low-stress like preschool or kindergarten (I'd so do this if my career path doesn't work out).

There are many. They are the ones who have the MA/PHD attachments and tenure.
