Because they don't want idiots who just bought their drone off Amazon a week ago flying around a lithium battery that is highly combustible over wooded areas, tourists, and protected wildlife.

Go figure.

You don't have to be condescending. I was just asking because I don't know shite about NP rules and regulations, also don't know dick about drones and their operation.

We just stayed at a Nat'l park in Moab, Utah. In addition to the signs posted at the visitor center, the lady taking my fees asked if I had a drone. Seems like maybe it has been an issue at that particular park

It was probably him

He frequents Zion and Bryce more often being that he lives in SLC.

I saw a Mavic at the McNeese/LSU baseball game a couple weeks back. I was kind of shocked that the pilot kept it outside of the stadium like he/she was supposed to.

They were still flying over and too close to crowds of people IMO.

why are they banned?

Question: Will the [FAA Part 107] rule allow flight in national parks?

Answer: The rule doesn’t restrict flight over national parks. No rules today, but the National Parks Service does not allow landing or taking off from their land. This would be the same as any local entity that have the authority over land use they can decide where you can land and take off. That is not an air space regulatory issue. The FAA doesn’t allow or disallow operations over national parks, but the National Park Service does regulate who does land or take off on their land.

Noise and spying. If they crash it would be trash left behind. Battery could cause a fire.

People using them to check their weed crops.

imagine a bunch of tourists flying their drones around Old Faithful, and so forth?

Probably other reasons other than just being a nuisance and fire hazard too.

National Parks are usually pretty big...plenty of space to fly without being close enough to anyone else to hear it.
Seems like if it did crash, the owner would have a fairly decent idea of where it went down from the video feed and would make every effort to retrieve it to have it repaired considering the fact that most of the decent drones are $500-1500.
I don't have one, so forgive my ignorance...but are batteries catching fire a big issue with these things? Hadn't heard of it, but don't doubt it considering all the exploding Samsung phones a while back

LiPo batteries tend to go up in a ball of flames when a cell is damaged or punctured. The resulting fireball increases as the size of the battery increases. Your Samsung observation is correct.

Yea, batteries are the biggest concern for drone usage. Why they even sell them to the public is beyond me.

My dad has 3 or 4 drones and whenever he is traveling by airplane somewhere and needs to bring his drone, he ships it ahead of time because he doesn't want to risk checking those batteries in at the airport and having something go wrong with them.
