So this guy I know lives in Utah and takes incredible photography of our national parks. I enjoy his work, but he recently got a drone.

He took it to Yosemite over the weekend and captured footage and uploaded it to Facebook (his outlet).

Am I an a-hole for telling him to be careful using drones in our parks because of the illegality? He may not know, so I wanted to forewarn him and tell him they've been banned (ESPECIALLY in Yosemite).

The penalties are steep:
Up to 6 months in jail
Up to $5,000 in fines

WWYD?

Why would that make you an a-hole?

Post some pics.

Is he your son?

Otherwise, buttowski.

PS: Any pics of his wife or female SO?

Is this a rhetorical question?

Well since you added the fine thing. Is it really illegal to fly drones on national parks? I have a friend that does this also.

Does he have his FAA license? Because that makes a difference.

If he doesn't have a license and is out there as an amateur, then yeah, he's opening himself up to some legal trouble.

Yes, absolutely and they should be.

My friend from Atlanta has that Maverick drone that thing takes beautiful video. I believe he does have his license though he got reported by a neighbor in his neighborhood.

The guy was a lawyer too.

Agreed. Drones don't belong in national parks.

IDGAF what he does, but if he gets caught I want nothing to do with it.

And I'm a national parks advocate, so I respect the law in that regard.

Idk if thinking drones don't belong in a park makes you an advocate, but that's neither here nor there

That's not actually 100% accurate. If you have your FAA license, and you receive permission from the national park, you are in fact allowed to fly in national parks.

A national park will not grant permission to those without a license, but typically will for those who do.

So the short answer is, if you have your pilot's license then yes you are usually able to fly in national parks.

Meh, if you're back country and have a permit I don't see a problem. I know they don't offer permits now, but I could see paying $100 for a week long permit or something like that being reasonable. Money could go straight to funding the park.

I volunteer for NPS and work in Glacier, and attend public lands hearings all over Montana and Idaho. If this doesn't make me an advocate, what does?

While I agree permits result in funding, if something malfunctions on a drone and it goes down, it could adversely affect wildlife.
