Educational authorities in Switzerland ruled Wednesday that the parents or guardians of students who refuse to shake a teacher's hand — a Swiss tradition — can be fined up to $5,000.

quote:

The local Education Department explained in a statement Wednesday that the school's exemption was lifted because “the public interest with respect to equality between men and women and the integration of foreigners significantly outweighs the freedom of religion.”

quote:

two brothers, ages 14 and 15, had argued that shaking a female teacher’s hand was against their beliefs as Muslims because physical contact with the opposite sex is allowed only with family members. One of the brothers posted material in support of the Islamic State on his Facebook page

quote:

Shortly after the teenage boys' refusal to shake hands became public, their family’s application for Swiss citizenship filed in January was put on hold. Authorities said they would investigate the circumstances under which the boys’ father, an imam at a mosque, arrived in Switzerland from Syria more than a decade ago.

It's a weird way to go. On one hand I think it's nuts people are forced to shake hands. It's crazy. Imagine being forced to fistbump in this country or face a fine.
Though on the other hand, I do think foreigners need to adapt and assimilate into the nation they arrive in.
Then the one kid supporting ISIS so F him.

A lot of hub-ub for what we would just call a slight.

If it's tradition it's tradition and piss on them for trying to buck it. It's just typical Muslim behavior. I hope they get kicked out of the country.

Yeah, many cultural traditions will look silly in a vacuum. But they are how culture is perpetuated. Reason so many people want to shite on them. Good for the Swiss here. Don't like it, go back to whence you came.

it's more than just the handshake. it's why they refused

it's almost like symbolism where they pick a really silly behavior to prove a much larger point

The story seems to sort of succinctly and wonderfully encapsulate both concepts. Sort of why I like it, I guess.

Exactly. Their house/country means their rules. Don't like it? GTFO.

In the US a court order would order the local education dept to rescind that or face fines or contempt charges.

Additionally, authorities would be ordered to stop the investigation regarding the father.

And, the boys would be allowed to go into the girls bathroom.

I'm conflicted here. On one hand, I'm all for freedom of religion and this is incredibly statist. On the other hand, this is such a backwards aspect of Islam.

This and not being able to eat bacon are why ISIS guys are such assholes. If they would just get laid and have a fatty breakfast they would be too tired to cut off heads all day.

If someone from Switzerland wanted to live in Syria, but did not want to follow their laws, then yes, this thread would still go this way.

People need to learn to assimilate when they move to other countries.

I work with a dude that doesn't wash his hands when he's done in the bathroom... even after he shits.

No way I'm shaking his hand, frick cultural norms.

You bring up a point. What if someone is sick? Then they are still expected to shake other's hands there?
