Many of the new alarm systems are now being used in combination with home automation systems. The thermostat is one of the more common items to have automated (like the nest). Just IMO if the guy was there to do her something wrong, why would he have passed up this opportunity? I think it was probably just a door to door salesman, but I would definitely use it as an opportunity to discuss with your wife and kids about not answering the door for strangers.

A random dude knocked on the door and claimed he was a door to door rep for some home security company and shower her a name tag. Was asking her if I was home, if we had an alarm system, and asked her if he could come in and check our thermostat.

She was smart enough to not let him in the house, but to not piss him off too much she asked if he had any brochure or information on the security company. He didn't. He asked if he could come back when I was home and she told him yes, but I doubt he'll show up.

Guy is trying to case the joint. This is almost word for word what preceded a bunch of robberies in my parents' neighborhood a few years back. The guys knew which houses to hit because they found out which had alarms and which houses the husband or both family members were away during the day.

This.

When I'm home alone you had better call before & let me know you're coming over or you'll be standing there for awhile.

So you think the door to door salesman with no sales material, business card, identification beyond a nametag, or company car was not a bad egg because he didnt storm her at the front door immediately?

No. That would've happened after she opened the door if it were actually going to happen.

Yep. If they didn't call or text before they came over, they're looking for trouble or money. No thank you.

I was addressing the question about why the guy would have wanted to see the thermostat since a couple people said it was odd.

We had them come to the neighborhood I lived in prior to moving to the house I live in now. Several of the ladies in the neighborhood posted concerns to the HOA Facebook page and one of the neighborhood watch members, who also is a cop, stopped the same guy the next day. The prior day he was unable to provide info showing he was affiliated with any alarm company. When the cop talked to him, he was able to verify that he worked for a company subcontracted for sales for ADT.

I'm not saying the guy wasn't a scam artist or whether he was a legitimate salesperson. I do think however that if his intention was to harm the man's wife, then he had the perfect opportunity to do it and did not. Could the person be scoping out the home to rob it? Sure. I never said he didn't have just cause to be concerned.

Ask a few of the neighbors if something similar occurred with them.
If it didn't...
