Tell her next time to say something like, "My husband is in bed sick, he works for the FBI and my brother is a State Trooper who does alarms on the side. So we're happy with what we have now, but thanks for stopping by.

One of those sketchy-looking meat salesmen (you know, the guys who ride around with a freezer full of meat in the back of a pick-up truck) came by one day when my daughter was outside. By the time I got outside, she had already told him that Daddy wasn't home. So he started his sales pitch on his shitty meat, I told him we had a freezer full of meat my husband had hunted and killed. In other words, we don't need your meat because we have guns and we know how to use them, so go away.

(And yes, we had a lengthy reminder lecture with our daughter later about not talking to strangers, what to say or not to say to someone at the door and on the phone, etc.)

Normally, I don't answer the door to anyone I don't know.

If you want a real guard dog get a Boerboel or a Fila. Great with your family/kids, won't let anyone in your house or near your family on your property unless you give the dog the 'ok'.

Very specialized breeds so chances are slim but anyone on TD who's had one would agree.

I'd probably go ahead and get an alarm now.

That incident would bother the hell out if me.

Only thing I am wondering is why he didn't just barge in as soon as your wife told him she was alone.

Still sketchy, though.

A thief is a but different than a rapist or a robber.

You don't want witnesses, you want easy targets.

I'm more scared of the rapist part. Stuff can be replaced, but that's permanent damage.

And my wife is attractive and small. Seems like the kind that they would target.

This was the middle of the day and my dog was present (not a big dog, so not a sufficient guard dog but noisy enough to attract attention).

We're gonna call the cops later tonight.

Maybe a group of alarm companies got together and hired sketchy guys to go door-to-door and freak people out enough to look into buying home alarms

My dads rule to my mom and up until I was about 16 was, "Never answer the door for a person we don't know is coming over. Period."

Was the guy wearing orange? Heard of salesmen in LA for some company starting with a 'V' (don't remember the name). It happend to a friend of mine and it sounded just as shady. He was traveling on foot and when he was declined he asked if he could come in and have some water. That didn't happen and nothing came of it, but I'd be very careful. Shady.

Guy was casing the joint.

'Selling' a security system is a the best way to find out which houses have security systems.

Wife shouldn't open door to strangers without a gun or mace in hand.

Yeah, why is she opening the door for strangers? Bunch of fricked up people in this world. That could have been a life changing experience.

This X 10000

I tell my wife that when she is home alone, to never, ever, open the door for anybody, for any reason.

hope she didn't tell him that you don't have an alarm, did she?

Even if not explicitly it was strongly implied that they don't by agreeing to have him come back and she also roughly confirmed the husbands work schedule (to a degree- if your at work Thursday during the day, have a stay at home wife and aren't out of town odds are your a standard issue professional schedule).

He didn't get in, but he atleast got some rough info to catalogue and confirmed it was a possible target- plus anything he could see from the door.

yeah those bastards always catch you off guard and it's tough to be an arse to kids selling stuff.

You are but you should be, its your job. If he really was a robber or a raper he probably would have just forced his way in after she said you weren't home.
