There are several scams going on in the Cleveland area just like this.
I will tell you that the dudes slanging those security systems door to door are usually very motivated, ready to overcome every objection, and do their best not to look or appear shady. They would definitely have a brochure and card handy.
It very much does sound like he was up to no good.

Yeah you're wife may have been robbed if she had let him in. It says you're from Lake Charles, I don't know if you still live there, but in Lafayette which is not too far away, they had a dude robbing people in the same manner in which you described not that long ago. So ya'll probably got lucky here.

Seriously, do you have an alarm? If so, put the signs out front. Stickers in the Windows. Print fake ones if you don't have a system.

Last time one of these frickers came by I told him to get the frick off my property and out my neighborhood. He asked me why I was being so rude. When he didn't immediately leave I pulled the tactical grip with the laser and pointed it at him (at this point walking to harass my neighbor) and he freaked out and started running down the street.
I have no tolerance for those types had I hope they think I am a psychopath.

it's a little late for that shite now. If he was just casing the joint, he knows it's a soft target. I'd imagine if she were to ever see him again, it's not gonna be a pleasant circumstance.
