I will if my disability rating isn’t great. For the most part though, no. The GI Bill was huge for me. I got a degree in IT and now I get to basically watch Netflix all day creating SAML federations.

Served 4 years USAF. Ended up leading me to my career in a field I would have never imagined having. Great friends, travel, memories, shenanigans, invaluable life experience. Taught me a lot about responsibility and accountability...it's striking at work how different the attitudes are between vets and non-vets. Vets get shite done, non-vets talk about it.

As far as those who say they wouldn't join now, it's been that way for decades. WWII vets thought VietNam era military was pussies, VietNam vets thought the 80's military was for pussies, etc., etc., etc. I joined in the mid-90's and was preached to by my seniors how much shite sucked now and that I should get out as soon as I can. No different than today.

If any of my kids were going nowhere fast despite potential, I wouldn't hesitate to encourage them to enlist in the USAF or any other branch.

I only spent four years in the Navy but it has offered my family a pretty swell lifestyle. I grew up with very limited opportunities but joining the military is something that is still helping my family at age 36. Very fortunate to have that opportunity.

This right here.

Got me out of my little town in Louisiana and showed me what the world has to offer. Taught me responsibly, discipline, and attention to detail while providing me support for the rest of my life.

eta: Obvious my grammar sucks though

I mean other than being drafted or court marshalled who would say they regret serving in the military. Most of us were young and needed the kick in the butt anyway. Sure you miss family and friends but those people you are serving with become that if you are stationed far away from home. I used my gi bill to help pay for my college and can buy a house using the va and get other benefits when i need to. Some of my best memories will be from the time i served. Of course maybe things have changed since i got out over 20 years ago.

Regret joining the Army. Not necessarily the military.

I have 2 years left and I'm out. Won't look back.

No way I would serve this country again
with what this country has become. I no longer believe in what it stands for. It is currupt at the highest levels.

You people act as if the US became "corrupt" overnight.
I have never trusted the government to look out for my interests and never will.

The US has always had ulterior motives and shady dealings. If you believe the US has ever worked in the name of the people..then yeah I can see why you would think it is super corrupt now

I haven't read every response, but I do not regret it at all. 4.5 years here, Marines, artillery. It truly does set you up for the rest of your life between work ethic and ability to deal with bullshite. You would come out laughing internally about what other people stress about (IE, finals).

I got out in 2016, when SEPS & TAPS had become a requirement for EAS. You join knowing about the GI Bill, likely not thinking about the home loan guarantor, but you sit through one day of that class and just think "wait, I'm eligible for what?"

29 now, with a wife and two boys who I would absolutely not have been able to support the way I can without the time in the Marines.

Plus, while you learn to embrace the suck, you make some of the best friends you will ever make. Can go years without talking to them, but see/talk to them and it's literally like you just had your last bender till 3AM with PT at 5AM yesterday.

As most have said already, I loved it and would not trade my experiences for the world. It has benefited me as a man and created opportunities for my family. My brothers in arms are lifelong friends and family. I served in 3/75 & 1/75 Ranger batts and it’s an absolute adrenaline rush and balls to the wall every day. Definitely gave me drive, determination, critical thinking under pressure, and judgment skill. I have two boys and would not recommend they join this day and age. Best friend is still in and always reminds me I probably would be kicked out by now or demoted to an E2 or something for voicing opinions in the trans military.

A little over five years in the USMC Viet Nam era. The Corp saved my little butt. I was headed down the wrong path. The residual is here today with VA medical care. They get a lot of bad press, but this vet has absolutely no complaints. The new NOLA facility is first class, staffed by folks that really care. The VA house loan and VA for education have been great. Hell, I can even get a plot when the time comes to plant this body.

I do not know a vet that has not stopped and thought at some point that if I would have stayed in, I could have that pension today. I would have been 39 starting another 20 year run & been in a position to call it off at 60 with two sources of retirement income.

I obviously have no regrets.

I think we all had this opinion about halfway through our enlistment. And I do mean all. Even those who reenlisted, about halfway through every contract were like "you know what? frick this."

Just wait until you have one year left and start seeing light at the end of the tunnel/planning everything else outside. That's when you start to realize how the great times outweigh the bad, and some wind up reenlisting because of it. It's the best and worst time of your life, and right now all you see is the latter. Of course, unless you're a shitbag and then there is just no recourse for you.

Report back when you have 6 months left.
