I see all these shows on TV about mediums and I've always been very skeptical of them.
Do you believe that some people can actually communicate with the dead?
How do you think these mediums do what they do? Earpiece?

I think the overwhelming majority of these folks just know how to read their clients and suggest things to make the client think they are real...basically, modern-day fortune tellers. However, if spirits do exist, I think they would reach out to certain individuals in an effort to bridge the two worlds. so, there is a chance...

The practice is called "cold reading".
The person will ask many questions in rapid-fire sequence, and the questions are generic:
"I see someone in this room who lost a child"
When someone answers they get a bit more specific but still mainly general (the child died "tragically"--most child deaths are tragic no matter the circumstance)
The final answer is that the medium always mentions the person says to tell you they are OK. No one ever replies that the person is currently screaming for water due to being tormented in flames.

There are ways to ask leading questions to where you get the person to fill in the answers for you. It can be convincing if you don't know better. As a skeptic, one night I found myself receiving a free "reading" at a bar. It was exactly what I already thought. Total bull shite. But I played along, and it was kind of fun even though I knew it was nonsense.
