OP, graduate and there will be plenty of work outside of south LA and the petro industry.

It really felt like prison on the Fourth of July when I got paid double time to BBQ. Or every morning when we cook breakfast in our kitchen. Especially feels like prison when we take a nap after breakfast. And then another after lunch. Oh and when we watch videos on YouTube.

I bet you're fat as frick.

Contractors can be treated like prisoners because a lot of times they closely resemble convicts.

The operators are eating tbones and watching movies.

Nope. Still waiting.

Damn.

It seems overcrowded right now though. So many people getting that 2 year degree from Sowela on the premise that all the operators currently in SWLA are getting old and will retire soon. I had a friend that took 5 years after his degree to land an operator job.

My brother was an operator and recently got promoted to supervisor. He will tell you the whole deal about there being a big void when everyone retires is not true. They already have guys in waiting usually and at worst they have to fill a spot here and there.

Not only that but SASOL is still a long ways away.

One of the worst attitudes that I've seen lately out of people is the "look at this person, son. Go to college so that you don't have to do that sort of work" mentality. I say that because such an attitude assumes that certain jobs, and thus certain people, are beneath the speaker. However, all jobs are important, even the ones that the OT and other groups of entitled snits look down upon.

I agree but at the same time there is nothing wrong with finding motivation to better yourself. Doing what someone considers a shite job is great motivation.

That being said, IDC if you flip burgers for a living because at least you are working and not mooching.

I was raised with this mentality...kinda

but instead of "look at that person", it was "you're going to be that person for awhile" to motivate me to finish college so I would not have to do that type of work

I worked construction/manual labor jobs all through HS and college

Pretty typical attitude of todays college generation. The expectations of getting a degree and then people will pay you 150k/year and you wont have to do shite is a total epidemic.

I honestly thought this was a question about actual plants. You know, having to bake in the sun all day in a pot, only interaction is with old ladies and bugs.

I think that you and stout had the right attitude. I've just seen too much of the stuff that I described above and it really bothers me.

Something else that concerns me a bit is the people who are steering their kids away from trades like plumbing, HVAC, etc. Someone else on this thread mentioned a future shortage at plants, well, we're seeing that in the various trades (and in farming...), so if I were advising a young person today, I would recommend looking into something like that.

New construction plumbers make bank. They are OT balling more than OT ballers.

completely agree

My BIL is an electrician and is killing it right now. He has to turn down work and continually raises his prices. He did not even graduate HS.

Electricians too.

That's reassuring, thanks.

I don't think it'll take me that long. I have a couple leads right now, but it's just waiting it out. Seriously, I may go to a delivery route. It beats this repetitive office bullshite that I've been delegated to do since they know I've got one foot out the door.

...and yes, it's COMPLETELY saturated. I went and tested for Valero in Houston.

From what I gathered, they tested 1,000 people.

How many were they hiring? 7. Ridiculous.

Did you do Process Tech or Instrumentation?

It seems like Instrumentation with some experience is a faster way to an operator job than the process tech degree is.
